Bengaluru Techie Scammed Of ₹48 Lakh In Fake ‘Sexual Wellness’ Cure, Suffers Kidney Damage

The CSR Journal Magazine

A software engineer from Bengaluru has accused a self-proclaimed Ayurvedic healer of deceiving him of nearly ₹48 lakh through the sale of extremely overpriced and allegedly harmful herbal medicines. The victim, a native of Shivamogga, filed a complaint with the Jnanabharathi police, alleging cheating, coercion, and severe health complications caused by the products.

According to the FIR, the engineer had been undergoing treatment for sexual health concerns at a multi-speciality hospital in Kengeri after his marriage in 2023. On May 3, while travelling near KLE Law College, he noticed a tent advertising quick cures for sexual problems. Upon enquiring, he was introduced to “Vijay Guruji,” who claimed to offer fast and guaranteed Ayurvedic solutions.

Medicines Sold at ₹1.6 Lakh per Gram

The complainant said Guruji conducted a brief examination and recommended a rare herbal product called Devaraj Booti, insisting it was available exclusively at the Vijayalaxmi Ayurvedic Shop in Yeshwanthpur. The healer priced the product at ₹1,60,000 per gram, warning that the medicine would not work if paid for online or if the patient disclosed the treatment to others.

Trusting his claims, the techie purchased the medicine and was later persuaded to buy more products, including Bhavan Booti Oil at ₹76,000 per gram, Devaraj Booti powder, and Devaraj Rasabooti priced at ₹2,60,000 per gram. To fund these purchases, he took a ₹20 lakh bank loan, borrowed ₹10 lakh from a friend, and received ₹17 lakh from family members, ultimately spending around ₹48 lakh.

Victim Threatened When He Questions Guruji

Despite following instructions closely, the victim saw no improvement. Instead, recent blood tests revealed kidney damage, which doctors attributed to the consumption of the alleged herbal substances. When confronted, Guruji allegedly threatened him, warning that his condition would worsen and that he could “die” if he discontinued the treatment. The FIR states that he also harassed the victim repeatedly, pressuring him to buy more expensive medicines.

Police Launch Search for Accused

Jnanabharathi police have registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 23 (involuntary intoxication), 316(2) (criminal breach of trust), and 318(4) (cheating). Deputy Commissioner of Police Anita Haddannavar confirmed that the accused individuals, including the shop owners, are absconding and that multiple teams have been formed to trace and arrest them.
