Assam CM Sarma Confirms More Congress Leaders Expected to Join BJP Ahead of Assembly Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a significant political move, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the joining of veteran Congress leader and sitting Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This event aligns with the upcoming assembly elections scheduled for April 9. Sarma emphasized that more leaders from the opposition Congress party are likely to join the ruling party shortly.

Future Additions to the BJP

While addressing the media, CM Sarma mentioned, “There are several individuals like Navajyoti Talukdar and others who will join the BJP in Guwahati.” The Chief Minister indicated an upcoming announcement regarding candidate selections and predicted further alignments from opposition figures within the next few days. His comments came shortly after announcing Bordoloi’s transition to the BJP, which the Chief Minister believes will bolster the party’s strength.

Bordoloi’s Resignation and Allegations Against Congress

Pradyut Bordoloi, who has had a longstanding association with the Congress since 1975, expressed his reasons for leaving the party. He accused the leadership of causing his sidelining, stating that this treatment contributed to his departure. Bordoloi asserted that while his potential candidacy was a factor, his resignation was influenced by numerous issues rather than a singular focus on ticket allocation for the upcoming polls. “The question of receiving a ticket was not a matter of life and death for me,” he clarified.

Congress’s Response and Upcoming Political Contests

In response to Bordoloi’s resignation, the Congress has nominated his son for the Margherita assembly seat in the upcoming elections. This development follows the recent switch of former Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah, who had been with the party for three decades, to the BJP. The assembly elections covering all 126 constituencies in Assam are set for April 9, with vote counting scheduled for May 4, as per the Election Commission of India.

Political Landscape Ahead of Elections

As the election date approaches, Assam is poised for a competitive contest between the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government and the Congress party. The current BJP administration, overseen by Chief Minister Sarma, seeks to secure a third consecutive term while the Congress aims to reclaim power in the state. The political dynamics in the region are shifting, making the upcoming elections pivotal for both parties.
