Anil Kumble Urges India to Promote Hardik Pandya in T20 World Cup 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

As the T20 World Cup 2026 progresses, the Indian cricket team has faced challenges with its batting order, leading to discussions about strategy. Anil Kumble, the former coach of the national team, has suggested that Hardik Pandya should be promoted in the batting lineup should another collapse occur.

In recent matches, India has struggled to maintain consistent scoring, experiencing significant downturns in performance during key moments, including their loss to South Africa.

Recent Match Performance

During the match against South Africa, India found themselves in a precarious situation at 26 for three early in their innings. Instead of sending in a seasoned batsman, the team decided to give Washington Sundar an opportunity to stabilize the innings.

However, Sundar scored only 11 runs from 11 balls, and India quickly fell to 43 for four within 7.2 overs while chasing a target of 188 runs. This performance raised questions about the team’s strategic approach during high-pressure situations.

Kumble Advocates for Hardik Pandya

Kumble articulated that he believes Pandya’s capabilities could serve the team better than using temporary solutions in the batting order. He emphasized that in the event of a similar situation arising, Pandya should step in rather than others who may not be able to handle the pressure.

Kumble stated, “Hardik Pandya is capable of managing that pressure and also taking the game into a winning position.” His comments underscore the potential benefit of trusting Pandya’s skill set during crucial moments.

Hardik Pandya’s Track Record

The all-rounder has shown impressive statistics batting at No.4 and No.5 for India. In six matches at No.4, Pandya has accumulated 131 runs with an average of 43.66 and a striking rate of 238.18. At No.5, he has scored a total of 1208 runs with an average exceeding 30 and a strike rate of 154.47. These figures highlight his effectiveness in these positions and support Kumble’s advocacy for his promotion in the lineup during tight matches.

India’s Need for Improvement

Kumble also pointed out that the Indian squad has not yet showcased their best performance in the ongoing tournament. He reflected on the South Africa match, where the team could have capitalized on reducing the opposition to 20 for three. Kumble noted, “I think India will have to certainly bring their A game.

They haven’t done that throughout this tournament so far.” He suggested that players need to be more aggressive tactically, especially when presented with opportunities to dominate the game.

Upcoming Match Against Zimbabwe

Looking ahead, India is set to face Zimbabwe in their next Super 8 match on February 26 in Chennai. The team will be eager to address its previous shortcomings and perform at its highest level as the tournament progresses.

Kumble’s insights may influence their game strategy as they prepare for this crucial clash, assessing the need to balance their batting order effectively to avoid past mistakes.
