In a recent address, Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a vigorous critique against the Congress party, specifically regarding its track record on corruption. Shah challenged the Congress to engage in a debate over its governance with respect to the alleged scams amounting to Rs 12 lakh crore during its previous tenure. This statement was made on Sunday during an event in Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, where Shah inaugurated and initiated railway projects valued at more than Rs 1,542 crore.

Shah declared that Congress should avoid making what he termed “irresponsible” statements and instead come forth for a discussion using factual data. He accused Congress leaders of achieving nothing in a decade apart from overseeing significant corruption scandals. His remarks were aimed at provoking a dialogue about accountability within the party.

“Those who speak irresponsibly should be challenged by the public to come forward with figures regarding their actions,” Shah added, reinforcing his claims against the Congress party’s history.

Defense of Prime Minister Modi

Shah also defended Prime Minister Narendra Modi against corruption allegations, asserting that no accusations of corruption, even for as little as four annas, could be made against him throughout his twelve years in office. This claim was part of Shah’s broader effort to contrast the governance of the present administration with that of past regimes, specifically highlighting the integrity of Modi’s government.

During his address, Shah spotlighted the substantial differences in railway investment for Gujarat under Modi compared to the Congress-led periods. He noted that the railway budget allocation for Gujarat was merely Rs 589 crore annually between 2009 and 2014, while the allocation for the state in the 2026-27 Budget was a remarkable Rs 17,366 crore. This stark contrast was presented as evidence of enhanced infrastructure development under the current government.

“What did you achieve during your time?” Shah reiterated, urging Congress to provide an explanation regarding their administration’s record. He emphasised the need for accountability, furthering his critique of the opposition party.

Launch of Railway Projects in Sabarmati

The gathering in Sabarmati marked not only a strong political statement but also the inauguration and foundation laying for several railway initiatives. Shah revealed that these projects, which exceed a budget of Rs 1,542 crore, include a WAG-12 locomotive maintenance shed, development works at the Sabarmati railway station, and the launch of India’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered train.

While addressing the crowd, Shah acknowledged the historical significance of the Sabarmati region, recalling Mahatma Gandhi’s contributions to the area in terms of Satyagraha, rural development, khadi, and his principles of simple living. He expressed that the railway projects are designed not only to enhance passenger facilities, connectivity, and safety but also to promote environmentally sustainable practices within the railway sector.

Additionally, the programme incorporated the inauguration of the maintenance shed and the introduction of alternative-fuel technologies to Indian Railways, reflecting a commitment to modernising railway operations while considering environmental impacts.
