Air India Gets Temporary Nod to Extend Pilot Duty Time Amid Middle East Airspace Curbs

The CSR Journal Magazine

Air India has obtained temporary approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to extend flight duty time for its pilots on specific international flights. This adjustment comes in response to recent airspace restrictions in the Middle East resulting from the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. The alterations are effective until April 30, allowing pilots to perform two-pilot operations with extended flight hours and duty periods.

Changes to Flight Time and Duty Periods

Under the new arrangement, the maximum flight time (FT) allowed can increase by up to 1 hour and 30 minutes, resulting in a total of 11 hours and 30 minutes. Additionally, the flight duty period (FDP) can be extended by 1 hour and 45 minutes, making it a total of 14 hours and 45 minutes. Specific details related to individual flights will be communicated through internal notices, ensuring that crews are informed of the changes. Beyond extending work periods, pilots will also be granted an additional rest period of four hours, beyond the regulatory minimum stipulated in the applicable Civil Aviation Requirements.

Operational Challenges Due to Rerouted Flights

The necessity for these exemptions was propelled by recent airspace curbs in the Gulf region, which have led Air India to implement longer, indirect routes for several international flights. These adjustments significantly complicated operational scheduling and required the airline to seek regulatory relief. The DGCA’s approval is intended to lessen the burden on operations, particularly for eastbound flights affected by ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Ongoing Conflict in the Middle East

The approval for extending pilot duties coincides with escalating tensions in the Middle East. Gulf nations have reported further instances of violence, following Iran’s calls for evacuations at three key UAE ports, an unprecedented escalation in threats directed at non-US entities in the region. Iranian authorities have accused the United States of utilizing ports in the UAE to conduct operations against Iran’s oil export hub at Kharg Island, although no evidence has been presented to support this claim.

Impact on Regional Airlines

In parallel, Israeli airstrikes have exacerbated the humanitarian situation in Lebanon, resulting in over 800 fatalities and displacing more than 850,000 individuals. The ongoing hostilities, which began on February 28, have led to significant airspace restrictions across the Middle East, impacting airline operations significantly. Various airlines have opted to reduce services, while Air India has been rerouting flights through Oman, southern Saudi Arabia, and Egypt to facilitate travel to Europe and North America. Additionally, some exceptionally long routes now include technical stops in Rome.

IndiGo’s Status Uncertain

At this time, it remains unclear whether IndiGo has been granted similar exemptions for its long-haul services, as the DGCA has not made any public comments regarding the situation involving other carriers. The impact of these developments on the aviation sector continues to unfold as airlines adjust to the ongoing challenges in the region.
