AI Summit Protest Investigation Transferred to Delhi Police Crime Branch Following IYC President’s Arrest

The CSR Journal Magazine

The inquiry into the protest by the Indian Youth Congress at Bharat Mandapam during the India AI Impact Summit 2026 has been reassigned to the Delhi Police Crime Branch. This development was confirmed by officials on Tuesday as the Inter-State Crime Branch takes over the investigation, which will also cover the context of the protest and the arrests connected to it. The decision follows the earlier arrest of Uday Bhanu Chib, the President of the Indian Youth Congress, who was taken into custody today under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to the protest.

Delhi Court Evaluates Police Request for Custody

A Delhi Court has reserved its ruling concerning a police request for a seven-day custody of Chib in relation to the AI Summit protest incident. The authorities have presented the case by claiming that Chib orchestrated the protest and facilitated logistical support for the demonstrators. They asserted that extended custody is essential to confront him with other accused individuals and to probe the alleged larger conspiracy involved. The police characterized this issue as one of unlawful assembly and criminal conspiracy, alleging that Chib played a directing role while several other suspects are based in Jammu, Amethi, and Himachal Pradesh.

Defense Team Challenges Custody Request

The defense counsel for Chib opposed the request for custody, arguing that it should not be granted automatically. They highlighted that Chib has already cooperated with the investigation on two occasions and expressed uncertainty regarding the origin of the T-shirts used during the protest. Additionally, they noted that previous questioning had not yielded substantial new information, suggesting that law enforcement could acquire the necessary details without detaining Chib.

Police Outline Allegations Against Chib

The authorities emphasized that the investigation is broader than the T-shirts, presenting evidence of bulk printing and operational coordination as components of a conspiracy. The court is anticipated to deliver its ruling at 12:30 PM. Charges against Chib include multiple counts under the BNS, such as criminal conspiracy, voluntary infliction of hurt to deter a public servant, and assault against a public servant during operations to quell disturbances. Additional charges related to hindering public officials in their duties and inciting sectarian strife based on religion and race have also been filed, with one of the charges being non-bailable.

Chib Brought Before Patiala House Court

After his arrest, Uday Bhanu Chib was presented in Patiala House Court by the police, marking a significant development in the unfolding events surrounding the protest. The ongoing legal proceedings will determine the next steps in this high-profile case as the police conduct a deeper investigation into the allegations. The situation continues to evolve as further details regarding the protest and associated conspiracies come to light.
