“A True Hero”: Netanyahu Salutes Indian Pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for Saving 174 Lives

The CSR Journal Magazine

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has praised Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his remarkable courage during an incident aboard flydubai flight FZ1073. This commendation comes after the pilot intervened in a serious situation in the cockpit, which involved an altercation between the crew. Reports state that Machchhar’s actions prevented what could have been a deadly aviation disaster, saving a total of 174 lives onboard.

During the flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, a disturbance occurred that reportedly involved one pilot attempting to crash the aircraft. Despite suffering a stabbing injury during the conflict, Captain Machchhar fought back assertively, managing to open the cockpit door, which allowed passengers and crew to assist in subduing the assailant, thereby averting a dire situation.

Prime Minister Netanyahu shared his tribute on social media, acknowledging Machchhar’s resilience and quick thinking. He stated, “My salute to the Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his extraordinary bravery… He saved the lives of 174 people, including Israeli citizens and other nationals.” The Prime Minister also wished for the pilot’s swift recovery, elevating him to the status of a “true hero.”

Flight Diverted to Saudi Arabia Amid Emergency

The aircraft, after signalling an emergency, was promptly diverted to Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. The flight initially transmitted squawk code 7700, indicating an international emergency, and later switched to code 7500, which signals a potential hijacking. This prompted a rapid response from Israeli Air Force fighter jets, dispatched to intercept the situation. However, as investigations unfolded, authorities ruled out hijacking as a factor.

Notably, the plane was landed safely without further incident, due in part to the actions of Captain Machchhar and the crew members. Passengers in civilian clothing played a crucial role in the successful landing. The situation was alarming, albeit ultimately resolved without catastrophic outcomes.

The Indian Embassy in Riyadh has confirmed that Captain Machchhar is currently receiving medical treatment after being admitted to a local hospital in Tabuk. Officials report that his condition is stable. The embassy is maintaining open lines of communication with Machchhar’s family and is poised to offer assistance in his recovery.

Investigation and Security Enhancement Measures

In light of the incident, Prime Minister Netanyahu has initiated a review of security protocols on both Israeli and non-Israeli flights. He cited evidence suggesting that the action taken by the flydubai pilot was self-defensive as he faced an imminent threat. Saudi Arabian authorities have commenced an investigation into the suspect, focusing on potential motives and conduct during the altercation.

Furthermore, Netanyahu convened a meeting with security officials, including National Security Adviser Shmuel Ben Ezra and Military Secretary Major General Guy Markizeno, to discuss broader national security implications. He alluded to recent communication threats, suggesting that Israel may face increased risks ahead of upcoming elections.

Following the incident, an additional flight carrying passengers from the diverted flydubai service safely landed at Ben Gurion International Airport in Israel, bringing back around 180 individuals, many of whom were Israeli nationals. This swift retrieval underscores the urgency and effectiveness of emergency response protocols in place as the situation unfolded.
