Badminton Rankings: Sindhu Returns to Top 8, Christo Popov Makes History for France

The CSR Journal Magazine

PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, has made a notable return to the top eight of the BWF World Rankings in women’s singles as of Tuesday. This advancement comes after her impressive runner-up finish at the French Open Super 750 event held in Paris, where she climbed three positions in the rankings.

This ranking is Sindhu’s highest since January 2022, when she was positioned among the world’s top seven players. After a period of struggling outside the top 10, she has made a significant comeback on the international badminton circuit. Her victory at the Japan Open in July, which marked her first Super 750 title, set the stage for her strong performance in Paris.

During the final in Paris, Sindhu faced world No. 1 An Se Young. Despite winning the opening game, she ultimately lost the match with scores of 16-21, 21-11, 21-12. This result extended An’s winning streak against Sindhu, but the Indian player’s performance has provided optimism as she aims for consistency in the upcoming tournaments.

Sindhu is scheduled to compete in the Hylo Open in Germany this week, where she will be seeded second in women’s singles. Additionally, she is pursuing qualification for the BWF World Tour Finals, which will take place in Hangzhou from December 9 to 13.

Chaliha and Other Indian Players Shine

In a remarkable achievement, fellow Indian player Ashmita Chaliha has climbed six positions to reach a career-high world ranking of No. 30 after her quarter-final appearance at the French Open. This achievement is part of a successful season for Chaliha, which also included a title at the Korea Masters Super 300 event.

India now boasts four players in the women’s singles top 30 rankings, with Tanvi Sharma at No. 21 and Unnati Hooda at No. 22 joining Sindhu and Chaliha. This depth in talent is seen as a positive sign for Indian badminton as the season approaches its conclusion.

An Se Young continues to dominate the women’s singles rankings following her successful campaign. Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi remains in second place, while An has maintained a significant lead at the top due to her consistent performances on the World Tour.

Historic Milestone for French Badminton

In men’s singles, Christo Popov has achieved a historic milestone by winning the French Open title on home soil, propelling him to the top of the world rankings. He secured the title by defeating Indonesia’s Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah with scores of 21-11, 14-21, 21-13 in a closely contested final.

Popov’s victory marks a significant moment for French badminton, as he becomes the first French player to win the men’s singles title at the French Open since Henri Pellizza in 1946, ending an 80-year wait for a home champion. His ascent to world No. 1 highlights the growing strength of badminton in France.

Another notable French player, reigning world champion Alex Lanier, is currently ranked within the world’s top five. With Popov leading the rankings and Lanier among the elite players, France is establishing a formidable presence in men’s singles badminton.

In contrast, India’s Lakshya Sen remains the highest-ranked men’s singles player from the country at No. 14, while Ayush Shetty holds the No. 19 position. Both players are expected to strive for further advancements as the badminton season progresses towards its conclusion.
