Who is the doctor caught red-handed by the CBI from West Bengal for taking bribe?

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested a doctor for allegedly taking a bribe in lieu of issuing a favourable inspection report to a private medical college in Karnataka’s Belgavi. An additional cash of Rs 44.60 lakh has been recovered by the CBI after raiding the accused doctor’s residence in Burdwan.

“CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed immediately after he accepted a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from representatives of the private medical college based in Belgavi, Karnataka. Later, the accused senior doctor was arrested,” the agency said in a statement.

Accused doctor heads the Anatomy Department at Govt hospital in Murshidabad

Dr Tapan Kumar Jana, who heads the anatomy department at West Bengal’s Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, was caught red-handed by the CBI. He is also an assessor of the National Medical Commission (NMC). Dr Jana is a resident of Hatisal area of Burdwan town, in East Burdwan district of West Bengal, which is at a distance of around 105 km from Kolkata.

State health department officials said the accused and his wife Sushmita Jana were both students of Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. The doctor was produced before Kolkata’s Bankshall Court on Sunday afternoon.

“A case was registered by the CBI on 24.05.2025 against three accused, including said accused, and two private persons and a private medical institute based in Belgavi, Karnataka, on allegations that accused senior doctor working as an assessor with the National Medical Commission (NMC) demanded a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from the representatives of a private Medical College in lieu of issuing favourable inspection report regarding their institute,” the investigating agency said in a statement.

CBI recovers cash, gold and diamond jewellery after raiding doctor’s residence

The CBI conducted raids and search operations at the residence of the accused physician in Burdwan town. The raid began around midnight on Saturday and continued till Sunday morning. As per sources, huge unaccounted cash along with gold and diamond jewellery were recovered from his residence. Sources said that besides the cash, gold, and diamond ornaments, the CBI officials also seized a computer hard disc and some paper documents from the residence.

“Searches were conducted by CBI at residential and official premises of the accused public servant and other private persons at several locations in Kolkata, Burdwan and Belgaum (Karnataka) which led to the recovery of additional cash of Rs 44.60 lakh. Total amount of cash recovered during the operation is Rs 54.60 lakh,” the statement said.

However, Dr Jana, who is currently attached to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital in Murshidabad district, was not at his residence when search operations were conducted. His wife, Sushmita Jana, who is also a doctor by profession and currently associated with a medical college and hospital in Kolkata, reportedly told the CBI official that her husband was on duty at his workplace in Murshidabad.
