West Bengal: 22-Year-Old MBBS Student Found Hanging in Durgapur Hostel Room

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic incident unfolded in West Bengal when a 22-year-old MBBS student was discovered hanging in his hostel room at a private medical college in Durgapur on Saturday evening.

The student, identified as Lavanya Pratap, originally from Patna, Bihar, was found after his friends forcibly entered the locked room in response to concerns from his family. Durgapur police were notified and arrived at the scene to recover the body, which was subsequently taken to a hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Family Reaction and Accusations Against College

The situation quickly morphed into a somber atmosphere on campus, with students navigating the corridors silently, as police initiated an investigation. Lavanya’s father, Anil Kumar, expressed his outrage at the college administration, claiming they failed to inform the family about the incident in a timely manner.

He recounted the events leading to the discovery, stating, “When my son did not pick up the phone, I contacted his friends. They broke open the door and found him.” Kumar criticized the institution for not adequately communicating with the family and questioned its duty to ensure the welfare of students who are away from home.

Academic Pressure and Stress Allegations

Kumar indicated that his son had been experiencing significant stress due to recent examination results. He noted that Lavanya scored approximately 50 marks in a written examination but received only five marks for practical assessments. The student had reportedly applied for a re-evaluation of these practical marks, adding to his academic pressures. Kumar also alleged that there were instances of inappropriate behavior from faculty members towards students, which he suggested further compounded his son’s mental stress.

Ongoing Police Investigation

As the investigation unfolds, Lavanya’s classmates have largely chosen to remain silent regarding the incident. Abhishek Gupta, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) in Durgapur, confirmed that a comprehensive inquiry is underway. He mentioned that the family’s statements would be crucial to the investigation once they arrive to speak with authorities.

The police are examining various aspects, including Lavanya’s personal circumstances, the pressures related to his studies, and recent events that may have contributed to the situation. An official statement from the hospital has yet to be released, and initial communications from the college were reportedly handled via email. Authorities are currently treating the case as a suspected suicide, pending results from the post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
