The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a significant financial commitment to transform 14,429 government primary schools into smart schools. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance digital education across government institutions, as announced during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow. The allocated budget for this project is Rs 300 crore.

Under this plan, participating schools will receive smart class facilities implemented in a phased approach. This method aims to facilitate a gradual expansion of technology integration within the educational framework of the state. The objective is to ensure that students and teachers in these schools benefit from modern educational resources.

As part of the initiative, students will have access to smart classes, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) labs, digital books, and extensive digital libraries. Teachers will also be equipped with tablets to foster technology-based teaching practices. This integration of digital resources is expected to improve engagement and learning outcomes for students.

Implementation and Tendering Process

The responsibility for implementing the smart school initiative has been entrusted to Shri Tron India Limited. The installation of smart class facilities will occur through a competitive tendering process. Relevant rates have been established at Rs 2,07,910 per school, which includes sanitation charges and Goods and Services Tax (GST).

If bids submitted during the tender process yield costs lower than the proposed rate, any surplus funds from the allocated Rs 300 crore may be redirected to cover additional schools. This flexibility in budget management aims to maximise the reach of the initiative across Uttar Pradesh’s educational system.

Currently, Uttar Pradesh boasts over 32,000 schools already equipped with smart class facilities. Additionally, more than 15,000 schools have established ICT labs, and 1,129 schools provide digital library services. This prior experience in implementing smart education highlights the state’s commitment to enhancing digital resources in the educational sector.

Expected Impact on Education

The smart class programme in Uttar Pradesh’s primary schools commenced in 2021, and its formal operation began in the academic year 2022-23. The new initiative to develop nearly 14,000 additional smart schools reflects an ongoing effort to increase the accessibility of quality education through technology.
