In Uttar Pradesh, at least 56 individuals have lost their lives due to 60 hours of unrelenting rainfall, and 46 others have sustained injuries. This information was released by the state government, which also noted the death of 107 animals and damage to 1,021 houses. The fatalities were concentrated in several districts, with Sitapur recording the highest number of deaths at seven, followed closely by Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, and Balrampur, each reporting five fatalities. Ayodhya and Gorakhpur both reported four deaths.

Among the injured, Hardoi recorded the highest number of cases, with seven, while Mainpuri, Shravasti, and Barabanki each had five injuries reported. Additionally, Sitapur and Lakhimpur Kheri recorded three injuries each. Regarding animal fatalities, Hardoi reported the most significant loss with 28 deaths, Sitapur followed with 16, and Kannauj with 14. Other districts, including Bahraich and Kanpur Dehat, each reported seven animal deaths, and Unnao recorded six.

Extent of Damage and Rainfall Records

The damage to houses was most severe in Hardoi, where 272 houses were affected. Sitapur followed with 108 houses damaged, while Chandauli experienced damage to 75, Auraiya to 60, and Gonda to 54 houses. Reports indicate that Hamirpur faced damage to 51 houses, Shahjahanpur to 47, and Bahraich to 44. Data from weather reports indicate that Lucknow received 125.8 mm of rainfall in the 21 hours concluding Saturday morning. In an alarming trend, Farrukhabad reported rainfall at 200 times its usual rate, while Kanpur Nagar experienced 160 times its normal levels.

Further measurements showed Banda receiving 227.6 mm of rainfall, followed by Fatehgarh with 224 mm, and Nanpara in Bahraich at 217 mm. Other districts, including Hardoi, recorded substantial rainfall amounts, contributing to widespread disruption. Areas such as Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, and Shravasti experienced heavy to very heavy downpours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipated continued heavy rainfall throughout the weekend, with indications of rain occurring in several parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.

Ongoing Weather Events and Public Response

As of 5:30 am on Saturday, a depression was reported over northeast Madhya Pradesh, moving towards southeast Uttar Pradesh. The IMD indicated that this weather system, located approximately 230 km south of Prayagraj, was expected to weaken into a low-pressure area within 12 hours. Residents faced significant waterlogging issues, disrupting traffic and causing challenges for those in low-lying areas. Local resident Praveen Singh noted that several thoroughfares were burdened with water, complicating travel for residents.

In Ayodhya, the inclement weather has disrupted movement around notable locations including the Ram temple and Hanumangarhi. Despite the weather, devotees continued to visit the temple, though they struggled to navigate the waterlogged areas. Farmers also expressed concerns over the impact on crops, with one farmer noting the potential for increased losses if the harsh weather persists.

Political leaders have reacted to the crisis. Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav shared footage highlighting the waterlogging issue on major expressways, criticizing the government for mismanagement. He suggested a name change to reflect the current situation on the Ganga Expressway.

Mayawati, the former chief minister and BSP leader, called for full support for affected communities, particularly in the wake of multiple fatalities and injuries resulting from rain-related incidents. State officials confirmed that 63 districts recorded above-average rainfall, heightening concerns of flash floods in certain zones.
