US Seizes Iran-Linked Tanker ‘Skywave’ in Indian Ocean Amid Crackdown on Oil Network

The CSR Journal Magazine

The US has confirmed the seizure of an oil tanker linked to Iran, named ‘Skywave’, in the Indian Ocean. This action follows ongoing military strike threats from US President Donald Trump, according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), which cited information from US officials. The vessel was detained overnight after being identified as part of a network that allegedly facilitates the transport of sanctioned Iranian crude oil.

In March, the vessel had already been sanctioned by the US. Tracking data revealed that ‘Skywave’ was last recorded moving west of Malaysia after traversing the Strait of Malacca earlier in the week. Intelligence reports suggest that the tanker loaded more than one million barrels of crude oil from Iran’s Kharg Island in February. These details have raised concerns about illicit oil transfer operations within the region.

The vessel was operating in an area known for covert ship-to-ship oil transfers, commonly utilised by “shadow fleet” tankers to disguise the origins of sanctioned cargo. This seizure is part of an ongoing series of actions by US authorities targeting Iran-linked oil shipments in the region.

Ongoing Crackdown on Iran’s Oil Network

In April, US authorities executed similar operations by seizing two additional vessels, ‘Majestic X’ and ‘Tifani’, also in the Indian Ocean. These actions are part of a larger initiative aimed at dismantling what the US categorises as Iran’s “shadow fleet,” a network consisting of nearly 1,000 aging tankers linked to the transportation of Iranian and Russian oil, allegedly in violation of international sanctions.

Numerous shipments from this network reportedly target buyers in regions such as China and India. General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had previously announced that the military would take an aggressive stance towards any vessels assisting Iran’s oil trade, reiterating that they will pursue Iranian-flagged vessels or any ships providing material support.

As the US increases efforts to combat these activities, tensions between the US and Iran continue to escalate. Reports indicate that President Trump recently considered authorising further military actions against Iran but postponed any decisions after consultations with Gulf allies, further complicating the geopolitical landscape.

International Implications and Diplomatic Efforts

The recent seizure coincides with heightened diplomatic tensions. It follows Trump’s recent discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to China, where energy security and the Iran conflict were key topics of interest. The US has been calling on Beijing to leverage its influence over Tehran to facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and advance towards conflict resolution.

In recent months, the US Treasury Department has also intensified sanctions on several Chinese “teapot” refineries accused of processing Iranian oil, aiming to undercut Beijing’s support for Tehran’s oil trade. These economic measures represent a broader strategy to limit Iran’s ability to export oil and consequently impact its economy.

The Pentagon has yet to respond to inquiries from the WSJ regarding these developments. However, the ongoing actions underscore the US commitment to countering Iranian influence and maintaining stability in key international waters, demonstrating the complexity of the current geopolitical environment.
