UP Woman, Lover Brutally Murder 22-Year-Old Son, to Claim ₹40 Lakh Insurance

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a chilling case from Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur Dehat, police have arrested a 47-year-old woman, her lover, and his brother for allegedly murdering her 22-year-old son to claim ₹40 lakh from multiple insurance policies taken in his name.

The accused, Mamta Devi, her partner Mayank Katiyar (33), and his brother Rishi Katiyar (28), allegedly plotted and executed the murder on the night of October 26–27 in Angadpur village under the Baraur area.

Murder Disguised as Accident

According to police, Mamta Devi’s son, Pradeep Sharma, who had been working in Andhra Pradesh for the past five years, returned home for Diwali. On October 26, Mayank and Rishi took Pradeep out on the pretext of having dinner at a dhaba.

During the drive, they stopped the car at a deserted location and repeatedly struck him with a hammer, killing him instantly. To make the murder appear like a road accident, the duo dumped Pradeep’s body along the Kanpur–Etawah highway near Balharamau intersection.

Investigation Unravels the Plot

When Pradeep’s cousins, Shivam and Saurabh, couldn’t find him the next morning, they reported him missing at the Baraur police station. Around the same time, Derapur police were informed of a body found by the roadside.

A post-mortem confirmed it was Pradeep. His family members, including his grandfather Jagdish Narayan and uncles, suspected foul play and named Mayank and Rishi in their complaint filed on October 27.

Confession and Arrests

Police arrested Mayank on October 28 after receiving a tip-off. His brother Rishi, who was on the gangster list, was arrested following an encounter after he opened fire at officers. Rishi sustained injuries and is currently under treatment. During interrogation, both brothers confessed to the murder and revealed Mamta Devi’s involvement in the conspiracy. She was subsequently arrested on Thursday.

“A detailed probe into the incident revealed that Pradeep was murdered. The hammer used in the crime, an illegal firearm and the vehicle have been recovered and seized. Both Mayank and Rishi were arrested after an encounter,” the Circle Officer said.

“The encounter broke out after Rishi opened fire on the police team. The police retaliated and he was shot at. He is in the hospital and is recovering,” he added.

Superintendent of Police Shraddha Narendra Pandey confirmed that the trio had planned the murder months in advance to claim insurance money. The hammer used in the killing, an illegal firearm, and the car involved in the crime have all been seized.
