Union Cabinet Approves Rs 1,677 Crore Expansion of Srinagar Airport

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has granted approval for a substantial expansion of the Civil Enclave at Srinagar International Airport. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced this significant development, labeling it a milestone for the region of Jammu and Kashmir. Singh emphasized the government’s commitment to infrastructure-driven growth as a foundational aspect of the initiative. He mentioned that the expansion will greatly improve passenger handling capabilities, modernize aviation facilities, and enhance connectivity in the Kashmir Valley.

In a statement on social media, Singh expressed gratitude for Modi’s leadership and foresight in driving infrastructure projects that provide tangible benefits to local communities. He noted that this move represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of Jammu and Kashmir, aiming to bring about enhanced connectivity, confidence, and overall development.

Project Specifics and Financial Investment

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has earmarked an estimated budget of Rs 1,677 crore for the development of the Civil Enclave. Official sources indicated that this project signifies a considerable leap in upgrading aviation infrastructure within the valley. Part of the expansion will include the construction of barracks intended for security personnel, ensuring a secure operational environment.

Srinagar Airport, which obtained international status in 2005, is strategically situated about 12 kilometers from Srinagar city and is managed by the Airports Authority of India within the Budgam Airbase of the Indian Air Force. The project encompasses an area of 73.18 acres and will feature a terminal building of 71,500 square meters, designed to accommodate 2,900 passengers at peak hours, translating to an annual capacity of 10 million passengers.

Aviation Infrastructure and Sustainability Features

The expansion will provide additional facilities for aircraft, including 15 parking bays, one of which is designated for widebody aircraft. The runway, stretching 3,658 meters by 45 meters, will remain under the operation of the Indian Air Force. The development plan also includes a multi-level car parking structure to accommodate 1,000 vehicles.

Architecturally, the new terminal is designed to harmonize modern aesthetics with the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir. It will incorporate traditional elements like elaborate woodwork and local craftsmanship while maintaining modern operational efficiency, featuring spacious lounges and advanced security mechanisms to streamline passenger processing.

Impact on Tourism and Economic Growth

Sustainability is a principal focus of this project, with features such as innovative water harvesting systems, optimized natural light to decrease energy consumption, and the use of eco-friendly materials sourced locally to reduce the carbon footprint. An ambitious goal is set for the project to achieve a prestigious 5-star GRIHA rating, underscoring its commitment to environmental considerations.

Beyond merely improving infrastructure, this initiative is expected to substantially increase tourism and drive economic opportunities by enhancing connectivity to popular attractions, including Dal Lake, Shankaracharya Temple, and Mughal Gardens. As a result, the project aims to stimulate investment and generate job opportunities, reinforcing Srinagar’s stature as a key tourist and economic hub.

Overall, the development of the Civil Enclave signifies a transformative leap toward creating world-class infrastructure, improving passenger amenities, and showcasing the natural and cultural beauty of Kashmir on a global scale. The anticipated benefits extend beyond aviation, impacting various sectors and catalyzing regional growth.
