TMC Rebel MLAs Appoint Arup Roy as New Chairperson Amid Rebellion by 58 MLAs

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent developments within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have led to the appointment of Arup Roy as the new party chairperson. This significant change comes after a rebellion involving at least fifty-eight MLAs from the party, which prompted a restructuring of leadership in West Bengal’s political landscape.

Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Ritabrata Banerjee, made the announcement on Monday, stating that a special session of the All India Trinamool Congress was convened to elect Roy as chairperson. Alongside him, a new thirty-member National Working Committee (NWC) was formed, indicating a strategic shift in the party’s organisational structure.

During the session, Banerjee expressed the desire for former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to take on a mentoring role within the party. This request underscores the internal dynamics and the necessity for guidance amidst the evolving political scenario.

Formation of the National Working Committee

The newly appointed National Working Committee comprises well-known members such as Firhad Hakim, Arup Biswas, Rathin Ghosh, and Sabina Yasmin, among others. The committee will also see the election of a District President and the formation of a District Committee to further strengthen the party’s presence at the grassroots level.

Arup Roy addressed the media following his appointment, stating, “Kaam karenge” (I will work), signalling his commitment to the role. Supporting this move, TMC MLA Sabina Yasmin added that the decision was reached collectively during the House meeting, underlining the importance of consensus within the party.

The shift in leadership comes after at least 58 of the party’s 80 MLAs revolted, creating a schism that spoke to the existing tensions within the TMC. This group rallied around Banerjee to assume the position of Leader of Opposition, replacing Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay.

Controversies and Internal Conflicts

The power struggle within the TMC has raised questions regarding the true identity of the party, with MP Saugata Roy characterising Ritabrata Banerjee as an outsider. Roy, who has been vocal about the origins of the new leadership, labelled the switch from the CPI(M) as a factor questioning their significance in TMC’s legacy.

Amidst these leadership struggles, financial issues have emerged, with former TMC treasurer Aroop Biswas calling for immediate action to freeze the party’s bank accounts. He cited disputes regarding the management and control of party funds, which further complicates the already fraught atmosphere.

In response to the situation, Ritabrata Banerjee has requested an inquiry into the party’s financial resources, aiming to clarify the legitimacy of funding used by the organisation. The demand for accountability has drawn counter-statements from Kunal Ghosh, who urged the rebel legislators to return any funds that were withdrawn from TMC’s accounts.

Additionally, Mamata Banerjee’s challenges have spread beyond state lines, as 20 TMC MPs, led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, announced their merger with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), adding another layer of complexity to the party’s current situation.
