The Ministry of Defence has announced the signing of a significant contract worth Rs 810.79 crore with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the acquisition of 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) and related equipment. This contract marks a notable step towards strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities. The agreement was formalised in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, highlighting the commitment to foster domestic production under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category.

Details of the SAT-SAAW System

The SAT-SAAW is a precision-guided glide bomb that is engineered to effectively target enemy airfields from considerable stand-off distances. According to the Defence Ministry, this weapon can be deployed from various platforms, including the Jaguar, Hawk, and Su-30 MKI aircraft, thereby enhancing the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) capability for precision strikes against vital airfield infrastructure.

Designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the SAT-SAAW boasts a 60 per cent indigenous content. Several key sub-systems, including the Initial Measurement Unit, Long Impact Delay Fuse, and Twin Store Carrier, are also being indigenised. The ministry emphasised that this initiative will further reinforce self-reliance in the defence sector.

This procurement aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to increase the domestic share of defence acquisitions and lessen reliance on foreign systems. The selection of the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category underscores the government’s focus on promoting homegrown technology and manufacturing.

Delivery Timeline and Future Implications

Deliveries of the 160 SAT-SAAW systems are planned to occur in phases during the fiscal years 2027-2028 and 2028-2029. This procurement is expected to significantly enhance the IAF’s inventory of precision-guided munitions in the coming years, contributing to its long-range strike capabilities.

The Defence Ministry remarked that the addition of these systems would bolstered the operational readiness of the IAF, allowing for uninterrupted operations and strengthening the overall defence preparedness of the country. The finalisation of the contract enables BDL to commence production and deliver the weapons and associated equipment according to the stipulated schedule.

This initiative is also anticipated to advance the indigenisation of critical components and support the broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision within the defence sector, aiming for self-sufficiency and decreased reliance on imports for defence needs.
