The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has announced the launch of a new doctoral fellowship programme aimed at transforming the outcomes of PhD research. This initiative is designed to shift focus from purely academic findings to tangible products, startups, and real-world solutions. The AICTE Innovation and Entrepreneurship Doctoral Fellowship Programme (AIEDFP) is projected to have a financial commitment of Rs 245 crore over five years and will support 150 PhD fellows. The programme was inaugurated by AICTE Chairman, Professor Yogesh Singh, alongside Member Secretary, Professor Shyama Rath.

Details of Financial Support for Selected Fellows

Under the AIEDFP, selected PhD fellows will receive comprehensive financial backing for a duration of up to five years, contingent upon meeting specific eligibility criteria and satisfactory progress in their academic and research endeavours. The monthly fellowship amount will be Rs 60,000, along with any applicable House Rent Allowance (HRA), for the initial three years. This amount will subsequently increase to Rs 70,000 per month, plus HRA, for the final two years of the fellowship.

In addition to the monthly stipend, each selected scholar may qualify for an Innovation Grant of up to Rs 10 lakh. This financial assistance can be utilised for various research-related activities such as prototype development, testing, validation, field trials, and travel. The aim is to support researchers in developing ideas into feasible and actionable solutions.

The programme encourages a shift towards problem-driven and application-oriented research, where outcomes can extend beyond academic settings and can lead to innovations that address pressing issues in society.

Collaboration with Industry and Other Sectors

A significant aspect of the AIEDFP is its emphasis on collaboration between researchers and industry partners, including startups and research organisations. By fostering relationships with industry, the programme aims to provide researchers with access to problem statements, resources, datasets, and mentorship. This strategic alliance will facilitate optional industrial exposure, allowing scholars to participate in real-world applications of their research for periods ranging from six to twelve months.

The ultimate goal of this initiative is to create a streamlined pathway from doctoral research to the eventual development of patents, prototypes, and commercialisation of technologies. The AICTE recognises that innovation extends beyond technological advancements, encompassing contributions from social sciences as well. Research in this area may be evaluated based on its impact on policy, community interventions, and overall social innovation.

Through this fellowship programme, AICTE aims to not only enhance the quality of doctoral research but also ensure that the findings translate into meaningful societal benefits. This dual focus on academic and practical outcomes positions the AIEDFP as a significant step towards bridging the gap between academic research and real-world application.
