The qualifying cut-off for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Master of Dental Surgery (NEET-MDS) 2026 has been lowered, providing an opportunity for candidates who previously did not meet the required threshold. On October 12, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued a letter announcing a reduction in the qualifying percentile by 20.576 points across all category groups for the academic session of 2026-27. This change affects candidates from General, Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and those with benchmark disabilities.
Details of the Revised Cut-Off Scores
The updated qualifying percentiles and their corresponding cut-off scores have been detailed as follows: for the General and EWS category, the earlier qualifying percentile of 50 has been revised to 29.42, with a new cut-off score of 423 out of 960. For SC, ST, and OBC candidates, including those with disabilities, the previous qualifying percentile of 40 has been lowered to 19.42, resulting in a revised cut-off score of 420. Additionally, the Unreserved Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (UR-PwD) category saw a reduction from a qualifying percentile of 45 to 24.42, with a new cut-off score of 218.
This adjustment aims to enhance accessibility for candidates who may have struggled to meet the original criteria, thereby increasing their chances of qualifying for postgraduate dental admissions. The revised scores are based on the updated criteria following the Ministry’s decision, which reflects a significant shift in the admission landscape for the upcoming academic year.
It is important to note that while the cut-off has been lowered, meeting the revised qualifying score does not guarantee an MDS seat. Admission will still depend on various factors, including applicable eligibility requirements, merit position, seat availability, and counselling regulations.
Impact on NEET-MDS Ranks
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has confirmed that the NEET-MDS 2026 ranks, which were published with the result notification on June 2, will remain unchanged despite the revised qualifying percentiles. The Ministry has instructed the examination authority to issue updated results in accordance with the new cut-off scores and has requested the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) to prioritise necessary actions.
Candidates are advised to regularly check the official NBEMS website and the MCC portal for updates regarding revised results and counselling procedures. It is essential for candidates to ensure they meet the eligibility conditions as specified in the NEET-MDS 2026 information bulletin, as these will still play a critical role in the admission process.
The decision to lower the cut-off scores is expected to facilitate a broader range of candidates in the admission process, although it remains crucial for them to stay informed about the developments and requirements as they prepare for the next steps in their educational journey.
