Tamil Nadu Government Credits Rs 2,000 Monthly Pension to Vulnerable Groups

The CSR Journal Magazine

On March 3, the Tamil Nadu government deposited Rs 2,000 alongside a monthly pension into the accounts of various beneficiaries, including the elderly, widows, elderly transgender individuals, and persons with disabilities. Chief Minister MK Stalin made this announcement on a social media platform, revealing that the government has broadened the scope of the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam (KMUT) scheme to include these marginalized groups.

The state administration has allocated a total of Rs 3,200 each to approximately 29.29 lakh elderly and widowed beneficiaries. Additionally, Rs 3,500 has been provided to 5.92 lakh individuals with disabilities, while families of 2.58 lakh individuals with disabilities receiving caregiver support have been granted Rs 4,000. The Chief Minister stated, “Special financial aid for those on the margins is essential. The summer special package of Rs 2,000 for women under the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam has garnered positive feedback, prompting calls to extend such financial aid to other vulnerable populations.”

He further mentioned that this financial support is intended to ease challenges faced by these communities. The funds were credited to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts along with the March pension payments. The announcement detailed that Rs 3,200 was issued to 29 lakh 29 thousand beneficiaries, Rs 3,500 to nearly 6 lakh persons with disabilities, and Rs 4,000 for the families of over 2 lakh individuals receiving caregiver assistance, amounting to substantial support for these vulnerable populations.

In addition to the pension scheme, the Tamil Nadu government declared an assistance package of Rs 8,000 per family to support fishing communities during the fishing ban period running from April to June. This aid is set to benefit 1,62,900 fishing families across the state. Furthermore, financial assistance totaling Rs 8.53 crore has been announced for around 14,870 tea farmers in the Nilgiris district, offering a base price of Rs 2 per kilogram for green tea procured through 15 cooperative tea factories.

The Chief Minister reiterated a commitment to inclusion, stating, “In Tamil Nadu’s journey of growth, we will leave no one behind.” This promise of support demonstrates the government’s intention to reach various vulnerable sectors of society, ensuring that those in need receive the necessary assistance.

These welfare announcements come in a politically charged atmosphere as Tamil Nadu prepares for legislative assembly elections scheduled for the first half of this year. The ruling DMK-led coalition is working to secure a favorable outcome against the opposition NDA, amidst ongoing efforts to promote social aid and welfare initiatives.
