Safety of Indians is Our Top Priority, Says EAM Jaishankar Amid West Asia Crisis

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a session addressing the Rajya Sabha on March 9, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar conveyed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is directly overseeing the ongoing crisis in West Asia. Discussing the tumultuous circumstances in the region, Jaishankar confirmed that formal advisories have been issued to Indian nationals residing in Iran, emphasising that protecting citizens remains the government’s foremost priority. “The Prime Minister continues to closely monitor the emerging developments, and relevant ministries are coordinating to ensure effective responses,” Jaishankar stated.

Embassy Operations and Assistance for Students

Jaishankar further highlighted that the government is maintaining ongoing communication with Indians throughout the Gulf region. He noted that the Indian Embassy in Tehran is “fully operational,” offering active support to students affected by the conflict. The minister mentioned that the embassy has already helped several students relocate to “safer areas.” Additionally, he pointed out that intensive efforts are underway to assist Indians stranded in countries like Qatar and Jordan to ensure their safe return.

Human Cost of Maritime Disruptions

Providing a grim update on the human cost associated with maritime disruptions, Jaishankar informed the Rajya Sabha about the loss of two Indian mariners from merchant shipping, with one individual currently unaccounted for. Detailing the broader implications of the conflict, he stated, “This ongoing situation is of particular concern to India. We are in a neighboring region and have significant stakes in maintaining stability in West Asia.” Jaishankar reminded the House that nearly one crore Indians reside and work in Gulf nations, with many others in Iran for educational or employment purposes.

Impact on Energy Security and Supply Chains

Jaishankar emphasized that the region is crucial for India’s energy security due to its status as a key supplier of oil and gas. He cautioned against the “serious supply chain disruptions and instability,” noting that the conflict has worsened, with the regional security landscape “deteriorating significantly.” According to him, hostilities have spread to neighboring countries, leading to extensive destruction that visibly affects daily life and activities.

Call for Dialogue and Diplomacy

Reinforcing India’s diplomatic stance, Jaishankar reiterated the necessity for “dialogue and diplomacy as a means for all parties to de-escalate tensions.” He recalled that the government conveyed its concerns as early as February 20, urging all involved parties to exercise restraint. “We continue to assert that dialogue and diplomacy must be pursued to reduce tensions,” the minister stated, amid considerable disruption and slogan shouting by Opposition Members of Parliament within the House.
