Royal Challengers Bengaluru Invests ₹7 Crore to Boost Safety at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium

The CSR Journal Magazine

Royal Challengers Bengaluru has allocated approximately Rs 7 crore to bolster crowd safety at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. This initiative follows a tragic incident that occurred nearly a year ago, where a stampede during the team’s IPL trophy celebrations resulted in the deaths of 11 fans. This significant refurbishment marks the most extensive overhaul of crowd management systems at the stadium to date. The calamity unfolded on June 4, 2025, when a large throng gathered to commemorate RCB’s IPL title victory, leading to the fatal crush. The incident sparked widespread indignation and led to interventions from both the Karnataka government and the High Court.

Upgraded Surveillance and Monitoring Systems

At a pre-season press briefing, RCB CEO Rajesh Menon detailed the measures taken to avert such tragedies in the future. He highlighted the installation of AI-powered CCTV cameras throughout the stadium, which encompass areas inside the ground, concourse, and its perimeter. Utilizing an AI tool named Jarvis, the system offers real-time crowd counts and specific alerts for different sections of the stadium. Additionally, these live feeds will be accessible to the Commissioner’s office for ongoing monitoring. Menon explained that this system enables effective oversight with real-time alerts, ensuring improved management and safety during events.

Compliance with Regulatory Guidelines

RCB has adhered to all safety guidelines established by both the Karnataka government and the High Court. In light of these safety measures, the franchise has decided to cancel its much-anticipated pre-season ‘Unbox’ event this year. Menon remarked that the time since the tragic event has been one of intense focus on implementing procedures to enhance safety. He affirmed that RCB has diligently worked to follow the protocols provided by the court and ensure comprehensive safety measures are in place.

New Collaborations and Event Management Protocols

The agreements involving the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and RCB have undergone significant revisions as part of the safety overhaul. With the KSCA now acting as a co-organiser alongside RCB, they will be responsible for enforcing emergency planning protocols and standard operating procedures. Previously, RCB alone managed event organization while KSCA served solely as the venue provider. Entry and exit routes have also been redesigned; all stadium gates will now open four hours prior to each match. Additionally, ticket holders will receive metro access on match days, and parking arrangements can be pre-booked ahead of time.

Upcoming Matches and Continued Safety Focus

RCB is set to kick off its IPL 2026 home campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday, with five matches scheduled at Chinnaswamy Stadium during the season. The franchise remains dedicated to prioritizing fan safety through the implementation of these enhancements, demonstrating a commitment to creating a secure environment for all attendees.
