Rods, Sticks Fly in Midnight Brawl: GMC MBBS Students Clash Over Noodles; 15 Suspended in MP

The CSR Journal Magazine

A minor disagreement over who would be served noodles first at Sudhamrit Café turned into one of the worst violent incidents Gandhi Medical College (GMC) in Bhopal has seen in recent years.

The confrontation occurred just past midnight on December 4, when MBBS students, returning from Retina Fest at AIIMS Bhopal, stopped to grab a late-night snack. According to witnesses, some students appeared intoxicated, and a trivial exchange quickly escalated into a massive brawl.

Students Attacked With Rods and Sticks

Within minutes, what began as a verbal spat grew into a brutal clash between hostel residents and day scholars. Groups of students were seen attacking each other with sticks, batons and metal rods. Paras, a first-year student from the 2024 batch, was allegedly pinned down by nearly 15 seniors and beaten severely.

When senior resident Dr. Shailesh Chaudhary attempted to stop the assault, he was violently attacked and sustained serious injuries to his head and torso. Paras suffered arm and shoulder injuries and was eventually discharged, while Dr. Shailesh was admitted to the ICU.

Chaos Spreads; Multiple Students Injured

The violence quickly spilled over, as others who tried to intervene were also beaten. Several students received significant injuries, leaving the campus tense and shaken. GMC has been dealing with increasing friction between hostelers and day scholars, and this incident has highlighted deep-rooted hostility that has been brewing for over a year.

Students Ordered to Vacate Hostels

On December 5, the GMC administration held an emergency meeting to address the crisis. Fifteen students, belonging to the 2023 and 2024 MBBS batches, were immediately suspended, and hostel residents were instructed to vacate their rooms.

Dean Dr. Kavita N. Singh condemned the incident as “serious indiscipline” and reiterated that violence is unacceptable in an institution meant to produce medical professionals. She assured that further action would be taken as needed. Singh called the incident “grave indiscipline” and said medical students are expected to display maturity, restraint and professionalism. “Violence on campus will not be tolerated. Strict action will continue,” she said.

Recurring Clashes Raise Questions on Security

This confrontation is part of a disturbing pattern: over the past year, GMC has recorded more than three dozen disputes between day scholars and hostelers. Despite repeated incidents, students allege that security on campus remains inadequate, with poor surveillance and no timely intervention mechanisms.
