RJD Labels Nitish Kumar’s Rajya Sabha Nomination as “Political Abduction”

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a significant political development, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has confirmed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha. This announcement, made shortly after the conclusion of Bihar’s assembly elections, has elicited strong reactions from rival political factions.

Mrityunjay Tiwari, a leader from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), criticized the timing of Kumar’s entry into the Rajya Sabha as an unforeseen shift, labeling it a “huge political abduction.” Tiwari asserted that this decision reflects the changing dynamics and attitudes of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) towards its allies.

Concerns Over BJP’s Alliance Dynamics

Speaking on the unfolding political scenario, Tiwari remarked on the abrupt changes in Bihar’s political landscape, noting that few expected the BJP to act so swiftly following the assembly elections. He expressed that this move by the BJP was indicative of a broader strategy to undermine the Janata Dal (United) or JDU, further claiming that internal conflicts within the JDU are leading to divisions, with some members reportedly colluding with the BJP. Tiwari pointed to these developments as a growing transparency regarding the BJP’s dealings with its allies.

Nitish Kumar’s Political Journey

The seasoned politician, now 75 years old, highlighted his longstanding relationship with the people of Bihar while announcing his Rajya Sabha nomination. In a statement made through social media, Kumar expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him over the past two decades, emphasizing his commitment to the development of Bihar.

He reiterated his desire to serve in Parliament, pointing out that it has always been an aspiration to be part of both Houses of the Bihar Legislature and Parliament. Kumar assured his constituents that he would continue to work toward building a prosperous Bihar and expressed his support for the new government that would emerge from the upcoming elections.

Outline of Nitish Kumar’s Political Career

Nitish Kumar is recognized as Bihar’s longest-serving Chief Minister. His political journey began in 1985 as a member of the Janata Dal. He partnered with George Fernandes to create the Samata Party in 1994. Following his election to the Lok Sabha in 1996, he served as a Union Minister under the Vajpayee administration.

In 2005, Kumar helped the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secure a majority in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, thus commencing his first term as Chief Minister while allying with the BJP. The coalition experienced success in the 2010 elections but saw Kumar shift alliances over the years, breaking away from the BJP in 2013 to form a coalition with the RJD and Congress.

Shifts in Political Alliances

In 2014, Kumar temporarily lost his position but returned as Chief Minister in 2015, leading a coalition known as the Mahagathbandhan. The tides turned again in 2017 when he departed from the RJD and rejoined the NDA. He subsequently led another coalition with the BJP during the 2020 state elections. Most recently, in August 2022, Kumar left the NDA to realign with the Mahagathbandhan, only to switch back to the NDA in January 2024. His political maneuvers culminated in a decisive victory in the 2025 elections, marking his tenth term as Chief Minister.

Implications of Nitish Kumar’s Return to National Politics

Kumar’s recent decision to seek a position in the Rajya Sabha is seen by some as a strategic move that could enhance the BJP’s influence within the Bihar government. Observers suggest that this shift might enable the BJP to assert a stronger presence in Bihar’s political framework and could potentially reshape the leadership landscape in the state.
