A recent report indicates a significant rise in lung and thoracic cancers in India, with cases increasing sevenfold over the past decade. Alarmingly, approximately seventy-five per cent of patients are diagnosed in advanced stages, which complicates treatment options. Late detection often leads to growth of tumours large enough to exert pressure on surrounding organs, making surgical interventions much more intricate.

Complex Case of an 11-Year-Old Girl

The case of an 11-year-old girl highlights these challenges. For several months, she had been feeling exhausted despite her usual activities. Upon undergoing an ECG, it became evident that her heart’s positioning was abnormal in relation to the ECG leads. Follow-up examinations, including X-rays and a CT scan, revealed the presence of a tumour. This prompted her physician to refer her to Dr. Mahesh D. Interestingly, while this case is notable, there have been similar instances where Dr. Mahesh has treated patients with complex thoracic tumours.

Such cases include an 11-year-old boy who presented with a mediastinal germ-cell tumour measuring 22 cm. His surgery was particularly challenging due to the nature of the tumour and prior reliance on chemotherapy. Following a successful resection using a similar clamshell approach, he was discharged within a few weeks and remains cancer-free to this day.
