RCB To Wear Black Armbands In IPL Opener As Tribute To Fans Killed In Chinnaswamy Stampede

The CSR Journal Magazine

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will begin their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign on an emotional note as players take the field wearing black armbands to honour the 11 fans who lost their lives in last year’s tragic stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The tribute comes during RCB’s opening match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Bengaluru, marking the team’s return to its home ground after months of suspension and extensive safety upgrades following the June 2025 incident.

Tribute To Fans Who Lost Their Lives

In an official statement, RCB said the gesture is a mark of respect for “the eleven members of the RCB family who tragically lost their lives” during the victory celebrations after the team’s historic IPL title win last year.

As part of the tribute, players will wear practice jerseys bearing the number 11 during warm-ups, symbolising the lives lost. During the match, they will don black armbands as a sign of mourning and remembrance.

In a deeply symbolic move, eleven seats at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium will remain unoccupied throughout the match and in future games, serving as a permanent memorial to the fans whose support played a vital role in the franchise’s journey.

The stampede, which occurred amid massive crowds gathered to celebrate RCB’s maiden IPL title, resulted in 11 deaths and several injuries, sending shockwaves across the cricketing community.

Stadium Reopens After Safety Overhaul

Cricket activities at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium had been suspended since the incident, with several major tournaments relocated due to safety concerns. These included the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup matches and the state’s KSCA Maharaja Trophy league.

The venue also missed out on hosting matches during the T20 World Cup, reflecting the seriousness of the situation and the need for comprehensive safety reforms.

Following recommendations from a government-appointed expert committee, the Karnataka cabinet approved the resumption of cricket at the stadium earlier this year. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), led by Vice President Sujit Somsundar, undertook extensive upgrades to ensure compliance with safety norms.

Enhanced Safety Measures In Place

The stadium has undergone significant infrastructure improvements aimed at preventing any recurrence of such incidents. These include widening entry and exit gates, improving crowd flow management, and strengthening emergency response systems.

Authorities have also enhanced medical preparedness at the venue, with better-equipped facilities and coordination with emergency services. Inspections conducted by a committee led by Maheshwar Rao confirmed that the stadium meets the required safety standards.

As a result, the stadium has been cleared to host matches at full capacity of around 33,000 spectators, marking a return to normalcy for one of India’s most iconic cricket venues.

Emotional Start To New Season

RCB’s opening match is expected to be both a sporting and emotional occasion, with fans, players, and officials coming together to remember those who lost their lives while celebrating the team’s success.

The tribute underscores the deep bond between the franchise and its supporters, while also serving as a reminder of the importance of safety in large public gatherings.

As the IPL season gets underway, the focus will not only be on cricketing action but also on ensuring that the lessons from last year’s tragedy continue to shape a safer and more responsible sporting environment.
