The Indian Super League (ISL) for the 2026-27 season is set to commence on October 10, with Bengaluru FC taking on Sporting Club Delhi at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium. This match marks the beginning of the new season and will be followed by another fixture on the same day, where FC Goa will face Chennaiyin FC at the Fatorda Stadium. The league’s schedule reflects a structured approach aimed at enhancing viewer engagement, as both matches are designed to attract a significant audience.

Increased Weekend Focus With Majority Matches Scheduled

This season, the ISL has chosen to prioritise weekend games, with an impressive 68 per cent of the total fixtures falling on Fridays, Saturdays, or Sundays. In total, 53 out of 78 matches in Phase 1 are set for these days, a strategic decision reportedly influenced by fan feedback. This revamped scheduling aims to provide fans with more accessible viewing opportunities, allowing greater attendance both in-stadium and through broadcast platforms.

A total of 13 clubs will contend in the league this season, including established teams like Chennaiyin FC and emerging clubs such as Inter Kashi. The competition will feature familiar faces as well as new ones, with diverse matchups and locations aimed at engaging a broader audience. The inaugural season for some matchups, like the Goa Derby between Churchill Brothers and FC Goa on December 13, highlights the league’s growth and diversification.

NorthEast United FC will make history by playing in Manipur’s Khuman Lampak Stadium against Sporting Club Delhi on November 24, marking a significant expansion of ISL into new territories. These developments are seen as pivotal for promoting regional football and increasing its popularity across India.

Key Matches and Schedule Highlights

Defending champions East Bengal FC will begin their title defence on October 18 versus Churchill Brothers in Goa. Notably, they will miss the initial matchweek due to commitments in the AFC. The first Kolkata Derby of the season is also anticipated, set for November 29, where East Bengal FC will host Mohun Bagan Super Giant at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, further stoking the competitive rivalry in one of India’s premier footballing cities.

The ISL intends to incorporate breaks during significant international fixtures, with no matches planned between November 7 and 20 to accommodate players’ participation in national duties. By allowing players to join their respective international teams, the league aims to maintain the highest standard of player availability and performance during its matches.

Phase 1 of the season will run from October 10, 2026, to January 17, 2027, encompassing a total of 78 matches. At the conclusion of this phase, the top six teams will advance to the playoffs, while the specifics for Phase 2 and playoff structures will be announced in due course. The finalisation of Inter Kashi’s home venue remains pending, with updates expected as the club prepares for its home ground confirmation.
