Pakistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief General Asim Munir have arrived in Zurich on June 21, 2026, to participate in high-level discussions between the United States and Iran. This visit follows the recent signing of a significant 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at addressing various geopolitical challenges.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s office confirmed the delegation’s arrival, highlighting their role in the implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum. The discussions in Zurich are intended to advance the diplomatic dialogue initiated by this agreement.

The Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs also acknowledged the arrival of the Pakistani delegation, indicating the host country’s role as a mediator. The officials noted that the discussions would be held at the Bürgenstock resort, which is serving as a venue for these crucial negotiations.

US and Iranian Delegations in Switzerland

In conjunction with the Pakistani delegation, US Vice President JD Vance has also arrived in Zurich, reportedly to address the same issues concerning the Iran nuclear agreement and related matters such as the ceasefire in Lebanon. He conveyed optimism about achieving progress during the negotiations, which are expected to last for several days.

Prior to the arrival of Vice President Vance, US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were already in Switzerland, preparing for the opening round of talks with the Iranian delegation. The outreach comes at a pivotal moment, as tensions in the region have intensified.

The Iranian delegation, led by Parliament Speaker MB Ghalibaf, has already arrived in the Swiss capital. This group is designated “Minab 168,” a name chosen in remembrance of victims of a tragic incident in Iran. This specific reference underscores the Iranian government’s emphasis on humanitarian issues in the context of international negotiations.

Focus Areas of Negotiations

Discussions in Zurich will primarily centre on the nuclear agreement, with the aim of establishing a broader diplomatic arrangement between the United States and Iran. Both parties are expected to explore avenues for stabilising their relations, alongside addressing urgent regional crises, particularly in Lebanon.

Vice President Vance noted the importance of preventing further escalation, asserting that addressing the issues in Lebanon is paramount for stabilising the diplomatic process. He remarked that progress in these areas could contribute positively to a wider agreement, impacting various regional dynamics.

The ongoing tensions in Lebanon, exacerbated by recent Israeli military actions, pose challenges to the stability sought through these negotiations. Vance expressed hope that the situation could improve, given active management by diplomatic teams on both sides.
