O Panneerselvam Officially Joins DMK Ahead of Tamil Nadu Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

O Panneerselvam, the ousted leader of the AIADMK and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, made a significant political move by joining the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Friday. His arrival at the DMK headquarters was marked by the presence of current Chief Minister MK Stalin, who warmly welcomed him into the party. This event follows recent endorsements from Panneerselvam’s camp for Stalin’s administration and forecasts of a DMK victory in the upcoming elections.

Prior to Panneerselvam’s entrance, his son Raveendran was also seen at the DMK headquarters, indicating a familial alignment with the political shift. The event has generated a positive atmosphere among DMK members, particularly as MLA P Ayyappan, associated with Panneerselvam’s camp, expressed a desire to see Stalin continue as Chief Minister. In a statement made during an Assembly session, Ayyappan emphasized the importance of Stalin’s leadership in the forthcoming assembly elections.

Ayyappan praised the Chief Minister’s initiatives, notably the Breakfast Scheme aimed at providing nutritious meals to primary school children. He characterized the scheme as a visionary endeavor, likening Stalin’s role to that of a nurturing figure. He remarked on the visible shift among opposition voices, stating that those who previously criticized Stalin have vanished from the political landscape. Ayyappan’s comments reflect a growing sentiment in favor of maintaining Stalin’s leadership while expressing gratitude to political predecessors P.G.R. and M.G.R.

Upcoming Elections in Tamil Nadu

The political landscape in Tamil Nadu is already heating up ahead of the next assembly elections, scheduled to take place in the first half of 2026. The MK Stalin-led DMK coalition aims to promote its ‘Dravidian Model 2.0,’ hoping to secure a victory against the BJP-AIADMK alliance. The entry of actor-turned-politician Vijay with his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) adds another layer to the competitive landscape, likely transforming the electoral contest into a three-way race.

In the previous 2021 Assembly elections, the DMK emerged victorious with 133 seats, while its coalition partners, including Congress and others, collectively held 159 seats under the Secular Progressive Alliance. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured 75 seats, with the AIADMK claiming the most within that grouping at 66 seats. The dynamics of the upcoming elections will likely pivot on the support of new political figures and alliances.
