The CSR Journal Magazine

A nine-year-old boy who fell into a borewell in Rajasthan’s Phalodi district was brought out after a 39-hour rescue operation but was declared dead shortly after being taken to a hospital, according to officials. The incident occurred during repair work at a farm on Thursday, where the child fell into a borewell that is reportedly 1,050 feet deep. It is believed he became trapped at a depth of approximately 640 feet.

Details of the Accident

The accident took place around 1.30 pm when workers were engaged in repairing a faulty borewell at the farm owned by the boy’s father, Pancharam Bhil. As the workers were in the process of removing pipes, the boy allegedly slipped into the open borewell. His father, who was removing the borewell motor at that moment, witnessed the tragic event unfold. He stated that when he turned around, he could only see his son’s head and hands above the borewell’s opening.

In a desperate attempt to save his son, Pancharam rushed to pull the child out, but by that time, the boy had already slipped further down the shaft. This incident prompted immediate action from local authorities, who were alerted to the situation.

Police and personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) quickly arrived at the scene to initiate a rescue operation. A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), stationed in Ajmer, joined the efforts around 9 pm on Thursday. The coordination between these teams was crucial in the challenging rescue operation.

Rescue Efforts and Challenges

Rescuers employed various methods to locate the child and assess his condition. A camera was lowered into the borewell to provide visual feedback on the boy’s position. Additionally, oxygen supplies were arranged to ensure the child’s safety while the teams worked tirelessly to reach him. The considerable depth of the borewell and its narrow opening presented significant challenges for the rescuers, who had to navigate these obstacles carefully.

Throughout the operation, rescuers relied heavily on the camera footage to track the boy’s position. The rescue teams worked around the clock, facing numerous difficulties as they attempted to bring the child to safety. Their efforts were met with hope from the local community, who gathered at the site, praying for the boy’s safe return.

After nearly 39 hours of continuous efforts, the child was finally extracted from the borewell. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. However, despite the extensive rescue efforts, medical personnel declared the boy dead upon arrival at the hospital. This tragic outcome has left the family and community in mourning.
