National Forest Martyr’s Day: Sacrifice of Bishnoi Community

The CSR Journal Magazine

11th September, or today, is the Forest Martyrs’ Day. This day is observed annually to celebrate and honour the courageous people who gave their lives protecting the flora and fauna of our country. Among these martyrs are forest officials, rangers, environmental activists, and even regular village folks who resisted smugglers and unlawful entities.

Under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Government of India formally designated the 11th day of September as the Forest Martyrs Day in 2013. The date 11th September was picked in memory of the Khejarli massacre, which occurred in Rajasthan in 1730.

On this day, more than 360 Bishnoi people, led by Amrita Devi Bishnoi, sacrificed their lives to stop the felling of the sacred Khejarli tree.

“A chopped head is cheaper than a felled tree” are the words of the female forest leader, Amrita Devi. These words reflect her and the community’s love and respect for nature.

Many view this brave act as amongst the first and most powerful environmental movements, not only in India, but globally.

This year’s national celebration for the Forest Martyrs Day will be held at Dehradun, Uttarakhand, at the National Forest Martyrs Memorial. Tribute will be paid to martyrs along with awareness drives like tree plantation, conferences, rallies, and workshops.

Today, when the world stands on the face of climate change and plastic pollution, this day holds more significance than ever.

Become friends with your forests and protect them.
