Union Health Minister JP Nadda has marked the eighth anniversary of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) in a recent statement, highlighting its significant impact on healthcare access across India. Nadda stated that this initiative has revolutionised the healthcare landscape for numerous individuals and families throughout the country. He revealed that the programme now provides coverage for over 60 crore people, a milestone that underscores its scale and influence.

In a post shared on X, Nadda articulated, “What began eight years ago as the Sankalp for Seva of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji has transformed healthcare access for millions,” emphasising that it constitutes the world’s largest Health Assurance Scheme. More than 48.54 crore Ayushman cards have been issued, and over 13 crore individuals have utilised the treatment facilities provided through this scheme.

According to Nadda, the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to ensuring quality healthcare and financial protection for families. He acknowledged that the scheme has facilitated more than ₹2 lakh crore worth of hospitalisation and treatment through an extensive network of over 39,000 empanelled public and private hospitals.

Significance of the Scheme’s Impact

Nadda stressed that the figures associated with the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY programme convey stories beyond mere statistics. Each number represents families shielded from medical debt and patients receiving timely medical attention. He asserted that, “Behind every number is a story,” illustrating how the initiative has alleviated financial burdens and improved health outcomes for many households.

He elaborated on the positive change that the scheme has made possible, noting that it enables families to confront health crises without the looming concern of financial difficulties. Nadda pointed out that including direct testimonials and experiences from beneficiaries serves to reinforce the profound impact that such healthcare initiatives can have on real lives.

In his remarks, he reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fostering an inclusive, affordable healthcare system. This commitment aims to guarantee that all citizens can access quality healthcare with dignity. He remarked on the ongoing journey of transformation guided by the Prime Minister’s vision, positioning Ayushman Bharat as integral to this mission.

Broader Framework and Future Aspirations

The Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY was launched on September 23, 2018, as a flagship initiative providing financial protection for economically vulnerable citizens. It allows cashless hospitalisation coverage of up to ₹5 lakh annually per family, addressing secondary and tertiary care needs. The initiative has funded 13.25 crore hospital admissions, amounting to over ₹2.03 lakh crore, through well-established public and private healthcare facilities.

Currently, the scheme encompasses 1,961 medical procedures across 27 specialities and aims to protect families from substantial medical expenses. In an effort to broaden its reach, the programme has been extended to include additional vulnerable groups, such as Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) and individuals over the age of 70. As of September 21, 2026, over 44.81 lakh Ayushman cards have been issued to these groups.

Beneficiaries of the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY include families acknowledged through specific deprivation and occupational criteria along with various groups identified under government initiatives. Additionally, the programme collaborates with other healthcare frameworks such as Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) to enhance healthcare delivery, underscoring the government’s comprehensive approach to health management.
