A doctor at the YCM Hospital in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Maharashtra, has been suspended following allegations of consuming alcohol in the mortuary. This action was taken after a video surfaced, reportedly showing a gathering with food and liquor inside the post-mortem room. The incident has raised significant public concern regarding medical professionalism and the sanctity of the deceased.
The alleged incident took place on the night of Thursday, 5 October 2023. Dr Vaibhav Avinash Mhaske was identified as the individual involved. According to civic officials, a citizen waiting outside the hospital for a death certificate noticed unusual activity in the post-mortem room. Upon investigation, the individual recorded a video that later went viral, depicting a table laden with food and a liquor bottle within the autopsy area.
This footage has sparked widespread outrage among the public, leading to calls for accountability and a thorough investigation into the matter. The ethical implications of such behaviour in a medical setting have been heavily scrutinised, with many expressing disbelief over the incident.
Civic Administration Responds
In response to the public outcry, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) took immediate action. Additional Commissioner Kuldeep Jangam issued notices to Dr Mhaske and the staff members present, requesting written explanations by the end of the day. Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryavanshi has mandated the suspension of Dr Mhaske pending further investigation.
The civic administration has stated that the alleged actions violate the Maharashtra Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, highlighting the seriousness of the breach, especially within the context of a mortuary. Such conduct is considered a significant dereliction of duty, undermining the respect owed to the deceased and their families.
A departmental inquiry has been initiated, with a chargesheet expected to be prepared within the next 15 days. Dr Mhaske has been instructed to remain at the Pimpri headquarters and is prohibited from seeking other employment or engaging in business activities during the inquiry period.
Public Reaction and Ethical Concerns
The incident has ignited a debate on medical ethics and the responsibilities of healthcare professionals. Many in the community have expressed their dismay at the apparent lack of respect shown in a place dedicated to the deceased. The viral video has not only raised questions about individual conduct but also about the systemic issues within the healthcare system that may allow such behaviour to occur.
Concerns have also been raised regarding the oversight mechanisms in place at civic-run hospitals. The public is demanding stricter regulations and monitoring to ensure that such incidents do not recur. The YCM Hospital, as a civic institution, is expected to uphold high standards of professionalism, and this incident has put that expectation into question.
As the inquiry progresses, the focus will remain on ensuring accountability and restoring public trust in the healthcare system. The actions taken by the civic authorities will be closely observed by the community as they seek reassurance that such breaches of conduct will be addressed appropriately.
