A 27-year-old migrant worker from Giridih, Jharkhand, died in a shootout in Saudi Arabia, with his remains returning to India after a prolonged period of 120 days. Vijay Kumar Mahto was engaged in a power transmission project when he was reportedly caught in a conflict between criminals and law enforcement personnel. The incident occurred on October 15, 2023, during his delivery assignment, and he eventually succumbed to his injuries.
Family’s Response
Upon the arrival of Vijay’s body at Ranchi Airport, emotions ran high in his native village located in Dumri block. Family members initially refused to accept the remains, expressing the need for clarity regarding compensation and accountability from his employer. His wife, Basanti Devi, highlighted the family’s difficult circumstances, mentioning they have two young sons aged seven and five, and emphasised their lack of a stable income source.
Background on Employment
Vijay had traveled abroad for employment in early 2023, having taken up the job through a private contractor. He had previously returned home before rejoining his duties on December 31, 2024. His family is now grappling with uncertainty regarding their future without his income.
Parental Concerns and Demands
Surya Narayan Mahto, Vijay’s father, expressed deep concern about how the family will support the children and manage the needs of his disabled wife. He made serious allegations against the employer, claiming there had been no communication with the family following the tragic incident. The family is demanding financial compensation before they can agree to accept the body, reflecting their struggle during this challenging time.
Government Support for Victims’ Families
In light of the situation, Giridih Deputy Commissioner Ramnivas Yadav stated that families of deceased migrant workers are entitled to government assistance amounting to Rs 5 lakh, contingent upon the submission of the necessary applications. Officials clarified that the compensation from the employer would require collaboration with the UAE Consulate General and the relevant company.
Community Reactions and Concerns
The incident has prompted outrage among local villagers and leaders, who noted that many individuals from Jharkhand frequently migrate to Gulf countries seeking employment in infrastructure and power projects due to the lack of job opportunities at home. They have urged authorities to ensure adequate compensation and support for Vijay’s family, warning that protests may occur if their demands are not met.
