Tragedy on Indonesian Volcano: Juliana Marins, Brazilian Hiker Missing for 4 Days, Found Dead

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 26-year-old Brazilian hiker Juliana Marins who was trapped in the steep crater walls of Mount Rinjani was found dead after four days. The hiker died after falling from a cliff while trekking on an active volcano in Indonesia, her family and authorities confirmed. Juliana Marins was reportedly trapped for four days after she plummeted into the active volcano and was discovered dead on Tuesday.

Family confirms about death

Juliana Marins’ family also confirmed her tragic death in a statement uploaded to an Instagram account set up to monitor recovery efforts.

“Today, the rescue team succeeded in reaching the place where Juliana Marins was… With deep sorrow, we have to tell you that she did not make it,” the translated message read.

Efforts of the recue team

A rescue team had been trying to rescue her for the past three days, however the efforts came to an end after her dead body was discovered.

Juliana was trekking with her group early on June 21, when she slipped and fell off the cliff of Camara Nunggal, this is a point along the route of Rinjani summit.

Shortly after her fall, in a statement released by Gunung Rinjani National Park states that this dreadful incident happened around 6:30 AM, a loud cry was heard when she descended down the crater wall, and the rescuers have since then tried their best to save her.

The efforts of rescuing her were difficult because of dense clouds, difficult terrain and overhanging cliffs. It was confirmed by drone surveillance that Juliana was stuck 500 meters deep in the surveillance footage.

Drone Footage confirmed movement

Following her initial fall, drone footage confirmed that she is conscious and moving and the rescue team has managed to supply food and water to her. In an effort to rescue her, two rescuers had descended down the site, however they had to return as the structure doesn’t support anchoring. There is only one possibility and that is to trek down, but that would be a big risk.

“After four days of labour, hindered by unfavourable weather, terrain, and visibility conditions in the area, teams from Indonesia’s Search and Rescue Agency discovered the body of the Brazilian tourist,” the Brazilian government declared on Tuesday.

All possibilities are being explored, helicopters are also on standby, waiting for weather conditions to improve, there is very low visibility currently.
