Freight Loading Figures for September

Indian Railways has announced a year-on-year increase of 6.14% in freight loading for September, reaching a total of 135.35 million tonnes, compared to 127.52 million tonnes in the same month last year. This growth is attributed to a rise in demand across various key commodity segments, as reported by the Ministry of Railways on Tuesday. The cumulative freight loading for the period from April to September also saw an increase of 4.1%, amounting to 833.7 million tonnes.

Growth in Key Commodity Segments

Several major commodity segments experienced significant growth in September. Notably, foodgrain loading surged by 25%, while clinker saw an increase of 20%. Domestic containers rose by 10%, followed by coal with a 9% increase. Other goods recorded an 8.2% rise, mineral oil increased by 6%, finished steel grew by 5.5%, and iron ore saw a 5.2% uptick. This diverse growth across various commodities highlights the robust demand in the freight sector.

In addition, Indian Railways enhanced coal supplies to power plants during September. The average number of coal rakes supplied daily increased by 11.6%, reaching 443 rakes per day compared to 397 rakes per day in the previous year. This strategic move aims to meet the rising energy demands and ensure a steady supply of coal to power generation facilities.

Freight revenue for September also saw a notable increase, rising by ₹1,266 crore or 9.3% compared to the same period last year. This growth in revenue is essential for Indian Railways as it seeks to expand its presence in India’s logistics market. The organisation aims to improve last-mile connectivity and enhance capacity for industrial cargo, as its market share has dipped below 30%. The long-term goal is to elevate this share to over 45% in the coming years.

Future Projections and Revenue Goals

The Ministry of Railways has attributed the recent growth in freight loading to heightened demand from sectors such as coal, steel, and fertilisers, among others. This trend is crucial for Indian Railways, which relies on freight growth to strengthen its revenue streams. For the current financial year, the organisation has set an ambitious target of increasing freight loading to 1,765 million tonnes, up from an estimated range of 1,670 to 1,700 million tonnes for the fiscal year 2026 (FY26).

At the targeted freight loading level, Indian Railways anticipates that freight revenue will rise to ₹1.88 trillion, compared to approximately ₹1.78 trillion in FY26. This projected growth underscores the organisation’s commitment to enhancing its operational efficiency and expanding its market share within the logistics sector. The focus on improving infrastructure and service delivery is expected to play a pivotal role in achieving these ambitious targets.

Overall, the positive trends in freight loading and revenue generation reflect Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to adapt to market demands and enhance its operational capabilities. The organisation remains focused on strategic initiatives aimed at fostering growth and ensuring a sustainable future in the freight transport sector.
