Indian-Origin Woman Allegedly Attacks Husband with Knife Over Not Cleaning the House in US

The CSR Journal Magazine

Chandraprabha Singh, a 44-year-old Indian-origin teacher assistant at Endhaven Elementary School in Charlotte, North Carolina, was arrested on October 12 after allegedly cutting her husband, Arvind Singh, during a domestic dispute over house cleaning.

Police said the incident occurred at their Foxhaven Drive apartment in the Ballantyne area. Arvind Singh sustained a serious neck injury and was hospitalized.

Conflicting Accounts

Authorities reported conflicting statements from the couple. Arvind Singh told 911 that his wife became frustrated because he had not cleaned the house and “purposely attacked him with a knife.” Singh, however, claimed the injury was accidental, stating she was preparing breakfast and turned with a knife in her hand, unintentionally cutting her husband.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Singh was charged with assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury. Initially denied bond by a magistrate, she later had it set at $10,000 during her court appearance on October 13, where she was also assigned a public defender.

Singh was released under conditions including wearing an electronic monitoring device and avoiding any contact with her husband. Her next court hearing is scheduled for October 30.

Employment and School Response

Singh began working with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as a lunchroom assistant in October 2023 and was promoted to assistant teacher for grades K-3 in August 2024. Following her arrest, the school district suspended her with pay. Authorities confirmed the incident did not occur on school grounds and involved no students or staff.

Ongoing Investigation

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department continues to investigate, reviewing statements from both Singh and her husband. The case highlights the serious legal consequences of domestic disputes and the conflicting accounts that can emerge in such situations.
