India Unveils Avataar: The Nation’s First Amphibious Drone for Surveillance

The CSR Journal Magazine

India officially marked a significant advancement in multi-domain robotics with the launch of Avataar. Created by the Bengaluru-based deep-tech startup AquaAirX Autonomous Systems, this drone is recognized as the first amphibious drone in the country. Following its unveiling on March 5, 2026, the vehicle has garnered attention, particularly after securing Rs 12.5 crore in seed funding through Rainmatter, the investment branch of Zerodha. Distinct from traditional drones, which operate solely in the air, Avataar is engineered for effective performance both in the sky and underwater, marking a notable milestone for India’s defence and research technology sector. Essentially, it is an advanced robotic system capable of aerial flight and subaquatic operations.

Construction and Maintenance Features

Gouthami TS, Founder and CEO of AquaAirX, emphasized that the construction of Avataar involves a robust three-layer defense mechanism tailored for marine conditions. The drone features a carbon fibre structure resistant to saltwater corrosion, complemented by specialized coatings to prevent salt and other debris from affecting the sensors. Additionally, it undergoes a freshwater rinse after each mission to eliminate corrosive salt residues, ensuring its longevity and functionality.

Achievements of Avataar

The developers of Avataar have confirmed that the drone has reached Technology Readiness Level 6, known as TRL 6, a critical benchmark in scientific and engineering endeavors. This milestone indicates that the drone is no longer a mere concept confined to laboratory settings. Avataar has a fully operational prototype that has been successfully tested in actual environmental conditions, such as open water, demonstrating its capability to withstand real-world operational stresses including varying water pressures and currents. The achievement of TRL 6 signifies readiness for high-fidelity trials and brings the drone closer to full-scale production.

Key Features of the Avataar Amphibious Drone

Avataar serves as a next-generation Autonomous Tactical Aerial and Aquatic Reconnaissance vehicle. Its design allows it to function effectively in both aerial and marine environments without direct human involvement. By integrating the agility of a quadcopter—characterized by its four rotors—with the durability of a submarine structure, Avataar can conduct complex missions that were previously deemed unattainable by a single unit. For the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, this innovation means a singular tool for tracking vessels from aerial viewpoints and diving to inspect submerged structures or identify underwater threats. A built-in safety feature ensures that the drone avoids diving when its battery levels are critically low.

Advanced Navigation Capabilities

To operate effectively in underwater environments, Avataar employs a sophisticated suite of navigation tools. As visibility is often limited in dark or murky waters, the drone utilizes echolocation—sending sound pulses to identify surrounding objects by measuring the time taken for the echoes to return. This allows the drone to construct a three-dimensional map of its environment. Additionally, a high-precision speedometer monitors its movement relative to the ocean floor, helping it maintain a stable position and orient itself accurately.

Importance for National Security and Beyond

The potential applications for Avataar are extensive. It is designed for continuous surveillance of ports and harbours, capable of detecting threats both above and below the surface. The drone is also positioned to play a crucial role in offshore energy initiatives by inspecting underwater pipelines and cables. Its rapid response capability makes it an asset for search and rescue operations in intricate marine scenarios. With the ability to remain on station for extended durations, Avataar provides comprehensive monitoring, ensuring that no area remains unobserved.
