Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has inaugurated a newly constructed 317-bed Transitional Hospital in Vyara, the headquarters of the Tapi district. This facility aims to enhance healthcare services for the local tribal population and improve overall health outcomes in the region.

During the event, the Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for an upcoming 800-bed hospital, part of the UNM Medical College and General Hospital initiative, which is being developed under a public-private partnership model with the support of the State Government.

This healthcare project is part of the nationwide Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, celebrating 25 years of public service by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. By dedicating the facility to tribal and rural citizens, the initiative aims to improve access to essential medical services.

Facilities and Services Offered at the Transitional Hospital

The 317-bed hospital has been developed over 9,986 square metres and includes a variety of modern medical facilities. This includes 271 ward beds, 46 critical care beds, and a significantly expanded outpatient department (OPD) capability, accommodating up to 1,200 patients daily across 24 dedicated OPD rooms covering 17 clinical specialties.

Other key features involve four fully equipped operation theatres, one of which is designed for Caesarean and maternity services. An emergency room with a minor operating theatre and a post-mortem area will also be available. Critical care provisions are bolstered by 34 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, 12 neonatal and paediatric ICU beds, and six emergency room beds.

Additionally, the hospital includes advanced diagnostic facilities such as pathology and microbiology laboratories, a blood storage centre, imaging services including X-rays and ultrasounds, and an eight-bed dialysis unit. These additions are aimed at elevating the quality of healthcare available to the local population.

Impact on Tribal Communities and Future Developments

With the launch of this transitional facility, residents of Tapi district will benefit immensely from improved access to healthcare, as they will no longer need to travel approximately 75 kilometres to Surat for specialised medical treatment. This change is expected to save both time and travel costs for patients, particularly those from tribal and rural backgrounds.

The UNM Foundation, which is spearheading this development, is closely collaborating with the Gujarat Government under a PPP model to ensure the transition from the Vyara General Hospital to the new Transitional Hospital occurs smoothly, thereby ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services for patients.

The overall project will not only encompass the 800-bed hospital but will also include a medical college with a capacity for 150 students and a student hostel. With an estimated budget of Rs. 910 crore, these facilities are set to support the healthcare needs of more than 8 lakh individuals from both Tapi and bordering areas of Gujarat and Maharashtra.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Minister for Tribal Development Naresh Patel and various public representatives. Their presence highlights the government’s commitment to improving healthcare standards in tribal areas, which remains a priority for state officials and community leaders alike.
