The CSR Journal Magazine

The Gujarat Assembly has approved the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026, marking a pivotal moment as Gujarat becomes the second Indian state, following Uttarakhand, to adopt a uniform legal framework concerning personal laws. This legislation establishes a comprehensive set of regulations concerning marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption that are applicable to all communities within the state.

Government Reactions

Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the enactment of the UCC, labeling it a “historic step” aimed at promoting equality among all citizens. In a statement on X, Shah emphasized that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been dedicated to the concept of a uniform law since its establishment. He stated, “It has been the BJP’s resolve since its inception that there should be a uniform law for every citizen in the country.” Shah expressed his satisfaction that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance, the BJP-led state governments are consistently working towards this goal, highlighting that Gujarat’s passage of the UCC represents significant progress.

Local Leaders Celebrate Milestone

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel described the approval of the UCC Bill as a “historic moment” for both Gujarat and the nation as a whole. He noted that the implementation of the UCC is designed to provide equal rights for women across various religions and castes, thereby enhancing their dignity and security. Patel indicated that the process leading to the bill’s approval involved extensive public participation and was guided by a dedicated committee led by retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. This committee submitted a comprehensive report that evaluated different facets of the proposal.

Aims and Objectives of the UCC

According to Patel, the newly established law aims to create a unified legal framework while ensuring that no particular community faces discrimination. He expressed his belief that the UCC would fortify the social fabric of Gujarat and contribute to promoting inclusive development throughout the state. The introduction of the UCC is anticipated to foster a standard set of laws governing personal matters, facilitating a more equitable society.
