Kharge Hits Back at PM Modi Over ‘Dimagi Naxals’ Remark

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has expressed strong discontent towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following the latter’s use of the term “Dimagi Naxals.” At an event in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, Kharge urged the government to prioritise pressing issues such as unemployment, inflation, and investment, rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric.

During his speech, Kharge stated, “PM Modi is using the new word ‘Dimagi Naxals’. So, all of us are ‘Dimagi Naxals’.” He stressed that the Prime Minister should focus on the welfare of the people and discuss his plans for employment and economic growth, instead of concentrating on irrelevant matters.

Kharge went on to question the Prime Minister’s commitment to national values, saying, “Talk about what you are doing for the country. Speak about employment, inflation, investments, and giving jobs to the hands of the nation’s people.” He suggested that Modi’s criticisms divert attention from essential public concerns.

Historical Context of Congress’s Sacrifices

In his remarks, Kharge invoked the Congress party’s historical sacrifices made during the struggle for India’s independence. He asserted, “Are we the traitors to this nation? We fought for the independence of this country.” His rhetoric emphasised the party’s legacy while challenging Modi’s claims of patriotism.

Furthermore, Kharge accused Modi of hypocrisy, stating, “You, on the other hand, surrendered to the British, gave them written letters of apology, and today you claim to be patriots.” His comments seek to portray a contrasting narrative regarding the historical actions of the Prime Minister and the Congress party.

He continued, questioning the current narrative around nationalism, asserting that the culture of defining patriotism through acts such as singing “Vande Mataram” is misguided. He reminded the audience of Modi’s tenure as Chief Minister, asking, “PM Modi, when he was Chief Minister, why didn’t he sing it then?” This pointed question aimed to hold the Prime Minister accountable for his prior actions.

Political Tensions Over National Identity Issues

The recent exchange highlights escalating political tensions between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and opposition parties regarding concepts of national identity. The controversy intensified following Modi’s remarks during his Independence Day address at the Red Fort. He distinguished between armed insurgents and what he termed “dimagi naxals,” who he argued must be identified and isolated.

Kharge’s statements come amid ongoing debates surrounding the role of patriotic symbols and songs in India’s political discourse. The BJP has framed such discussions as vital to national unity, while opposition parties, including Congress, contend that the focus should instead be on addressing pressing socio-economic issues.

As the political slugfest unfolds, both parties appear determined to shape the narrative surrounding nationalism and patriotism in India. Kharge’s comments underscore a crucial juncture in Indian political life, as party leaders navigate the complexities of their respective historical legacies while addressing contemporary public concerns.
