In a shocking case of suspected domestic violence and dowry harassment has come to light from Karnataka. A 20-year-old woman, Sakshi Kambar, was allegedly murdered by her husband, Akash Kambar. The chilling incident that has sent shockwaves across Belagavi district. The couple had been married for just four months and were residing in a rented house in the city’s Kakti area.

Body discovered after 3 Days

According to the police, Akash reportedly killed Sakshi three days before her body was discovered and concealed her corpse under their bed before fleeing. The horrifying discovery was made by Akash’s mother, who had returned from a visit to her native village. Upon entering the house, she noticed a foul smell and later found Sakshi’s body hidden under the bed.

Local police were alerted immediately, and a murder case has been registered at the Kakti Police Station. Investigators revealed that Akash’s mobile phone has been switched off since the suspected day of the crime, complicating efforts to trace his whereabouts. A search operation is currently underway.

Dowry Allegations Under Investigation

While the exact motive remains unclear, Sakshi’s family has alleged that she faced dowry harassment at the hands of Akash and his family. These claims are now being investigated by the authorities as part of the larger probe.

The case has drawn attention due to its disturbing nature and the broader context of increasing dowry-related crimes across India.

Dowry Deaths on the Rise Nationwide

This incident comes close on the heels of a similar dowry-related death in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, where a pregnant woman was allegedly beaten to death by her husband and in-laws.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), India witnessed 15,489 dowry-related cases and over 6,100 dowry deaths in 2023, a 14% rise from 2022. Karnataka stood third in the national list for dowry cases, after Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Similar Incidents Across India Spark Concern

In Sangli, Maharashtra, police filed a dowry death case after a 25-year-old woman died following alleged harassment for ₹2 lakh to pay for her mother-in-law’s cancer treatment. The woman had consumed pesticide at her marital home in Islampur and died at a hospital in Kolhapur.

In Nanukheda village, Dewas district, Madhya Pradesh, a man allegedly killed his wife with an iron arrow during a domestic spat over food. The accused fled, and the police are investigating.

Demand for Reforms and Accountability

These back-to-back cases have reignited public and legal scrutiny over how dowry laws are enforced and the broader issue of domestic violence in Indian society. Investigations into all the incidents are ongoing, and authorities have promised swift action.
