Expat Workers Urged to Return as Delhi-Dubai Airfares Surge

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent announcement from several cities in West Asia, particularly Dubai, to resume normal business operations amid ongoing conflicts has compelled many Indian expatriates to incur substantial travel costs for their return. These individuals had previously managed to return to India after February 28 or were already in the country and are now being instructed to report back to work. Travel agencies noted that one-way economy tickets from Delhi to Dubai with Emirates are currently priced “at a minimum of Rs 50,000,” with average fares ranging between Rs 85,000 and Rs 90,000 until April 5. Post this date, a gradual decline in fare rates is anticipated. Indian airlines are offering limited flights, starting at around Rs 40,000.

Impact of Flight Restrictions

The United Arab Emirates has imposed limits on the number of flights operated by foreign airlines. Many travelers are favoring Emirates for their higher ticket prices to reach Dubai, highlighting the difficulty of securing affordable travel. Experts from the travel sector indicated that Emirates’ budget subsidiary, FlyDubai, offers slightly lower fares, beginning at approximately Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000. An alternative route involves traveling with IndiGo to Abu Dhabi and driving to Dubai, which costs around Rs 30,000 in airfare.

Family Complications and Job Security

In light of escalating tensions, numerous Indians in West Asia opted to send their families back to India following February 28. One expatriate working in Qatar recounted requesting leave to accompany his wife and child to Saudi Arabia before heading to India. However, he was informed that he could be summoned back to work at any time; failure to do so could result in job loss. The family’s transit visa for Saudi Arabia delayed their travel, causing him to send his family home via Qatar Airways while he remained in Qatar for employment.

Ongoing Travel Concerns Amid Conflict

The current travel scenario has left many Indian expats anxious about their job stability as well as the costs associated with returning to their work locations in West Asia. The fluctuating airfares coupled with restrictions on flight availability create additional challenges for those committed to their professions abroad. Many individuals are weighing their options carefully, considering both financial implications and the urgency of returning to their roles in the rapidly changing workplace environment caused by the prevailing geopolitical tensions.
