Donald Trump Takes Swipe at Macron, Questions NATO Effectiveness at Private Lunch

The CSR Journal Magazine

During a recent private lunch, US President Donald Trump made headlines with a personal attack on French President Emmanuel Macron, expressing his disdain for Macron’s leadership and his domestic life. Trump stated, “I call up France, Macron, whose wife treats him extremely badly. Still recovering from the right to the jaw,” in reference to a previous incident captured on video.

Controversial Comments on the Iran Conflict

Trump recounted a conversation with Macron concerning the US-led military efforts in Iran, indicating his desire for France to provide assistance in the Gulf region. He noted, “We’d love to have some help in the Gulf even though we are setting records on knocking out bad people and knocking out ballistic missiles. If you could, could you please send ships immediately?” He humorously imitated Macron’s purported response, saying, “‘No no no, we cannot do that, Donald. We can do that after the war is won.’ I said, ‘No no, I don’t need after the war is won Emmanuel’.”

NATO Critique and Strategic Concerns

While discussing military alliances, Trump took the opportunity to criticize NATO, labeling it a “paper tiger” and expressing doubts about its effectiveness in future conflicts. He remarked, “So I learnt about NATO. NATO won’t be there if we ever have the big one, you know what I mean by the big one.”

US Commentary on NATO Obligations

Recently, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed Trump’s skepticism, suggesting that the United States might reevaluate its commitments to NATO following the conclusion of the Iran conflict. Rubio stated, “We are going to have to reexamine the value of NATO and that alliance for our country,” during an interview.

France’s Position on Military Operations

In response to the situation, French President Emmanuel Macron clarified that France had not been consulted or involved in the military operations against Iran initiated by the United States and allies. He emphasized, “France, which has not been consulted and is not part of this military offensive launched by the United States and Israel, is not taking part in it,” in a statement to a Japanese broadcaster.
