ABVP Wins Eight Out of Thirteen Odisha Universities in Student Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has secured victories in eight out of the thirteen state universities in Odisha during the student union elections held on October 15. This outcome follows recent successes for the organisation at Panjab University and Delhi University, as noted by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who praised the results as indicative of youth support for the “Nation First” ideology.

Details of the Election Results

According to reports from PTI, the ABVP claimed to have won eight president, eight vice-president, ten secretary, and eleven assistant general secretary positions across the eight universities. Diptimayee Pratihari, the state secretary of ABVP, stated that the organisation achieved a clean sweep at Utkal University, while at Ravenshaw University, they secured every position except for the presidency.

In contrast, candidates from the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD), the student wing of the Biju Janata Dal, reportedly won the president’s position in five universities and the general secretary’s role in one. Additionally, the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), backed by the Congress party, secured the general secretary’s position in one university.

Shah’s remarks highlighted the significance of these victories, suggesting they reflect a broader alignment of youth with the “Nation First” ideology. He stated that the results serve as a strong message against perceived anti-national sentiments, in reference to ongoing protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

Claims of Broader Success by BCJD

While the results from the universities indicate a strong performance by ABVP, the BCJD has contested the overall narrative, asserting that its candidates have won a majority of college unions throughout Odisha. Ipsita Sahoo, president of BCJD, claimed that their organisation had achieved victories in approximately 55 to 60 per cent of college unions across the state, including at Rama Devi Women’s University and Ravenshaw University.

Sahoo further stated that candidates supported by the BJD performed well in most women’s colleges in Odisha, suggesting a significant presence in the college-level elections. This divergence in claims presents a complex picture of the electoral landscape, with ABVP focusing on its achievements in state universities while BCJD highlights its success in college unions.

The student union elections in Odisha do not officially operate along political party lines, although political affiliations influence candidate support. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) backed ABVP candidates, while the Biju Janata Dal supported BCJD candidates, and the Congress party endorsed NSUI candidates.

Conclusion on the Election Outcomes

The contrasting claims regarding the election outcomes illustrate the competitive nature of student politics in Odisha. While ABVP celebrates its victories in state universities, the BCJD maintains that its performance in college unions should not be overlooked. The developments in these elections reflect ongoing dynamics in student politics, with various organisations vying for influence and representation among the youth in Odisha.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the implications of these election results may extend beyond the universities and colleges, potentially influencing broader political narratives in the region. The coming weeks may reveal further insights into the impact of these student elections on future political engagements and affiliations among the youth in Odisha.
