A Delhi Metro security guard, Pankaj Dhama, aged 35, tragically lost his life due to injuries sustained during an altercation at Shahdara railway station in East Delhi. The incident occurred on Friday, 21 June 2026, as Dhama was en route to his village after completing his shift at the IP Extension Metro station. Reports indicate that he was travelling on the Yoga Express when he stood near the train’s door as it arrived at the station.

According to police accounts, a confrontation arose on Platform 3 amid the hectic scene of passengers boarding and disembarking from the train. This initial dispute escalated remarkably, resulting in a physical fight where Dhama was reportedly attacked by fellow passengers, sustaining critical injuries.

Medical personnel transported Dhama to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. His untimely demise has raised serious concerns regarding passenger safety and conduct in crowded transport areas.

Investigation and Arrests Made

The Delhi Police promptly initiated an investigation following the incident, leading to the identification of six individuals allegedly involved in the attack. Of these, three individuals were determined to be minors, while the remaining three adults, identified as Sagar, Prince, and Akash, were apprehended and subsequently presented in court.

In an unexpected turn, the court granted bail to the adult suspects within 24 hours of their arrest. This decision has stirred public interest and prompted discussions surrounding the legal process for such violent incidents.

The juvenile suspects were taken before the Juvenile Justice Board and were subsequently placed in a juvenile home as part of the measures taken during ongoing proceedings. The police continue to gather evidence, including examining CCTV footage from the railway station, as they investigate the circumstances leading to this tragic event.

Public Reaction and Legal Proceedings

The incident has sparked outrage and concern among the public regarding the safety measures in place at railway stations and similar crowded transit areas. A video circulating on social media showcases the chaos that ensued during the confrontation, highlighting the urgency with which authorities intervened.

In response to the incident, the police have filed a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), specifically Sections 105 for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and 3(5) concerning common intention. Eyewitness accounts are being solicited to further illuminate the details surrounding the case.

As investigations proceed, law enforcement agencies are under pressure to ensure justice for the victim and to enhance security measures at public transport facilities to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
