Delhi blast case: Arrested doctor Shaheen Shahid was ‘open-minded’, says ex-husband, brother expresses shock

The CSR Journal Magazine

Lucknow-based female doctor Shaheen Shahid was arrested in the Faridabad explosives recovery incident and Delhi Red Fort blast case. Shaheen was open-minded and against any kind of religious fanaticism. This is what Shaheen’s ex-husband Dr Zafar Hayat claims.

Dr Shaheen Shahid’s ex-husband, Dr Zafar Hayat has stated he was shocked to learn about her alleged terror connections and that he was completely unaware of any of her suspicious activities.

The couple separated in 2012. Dr Hayat, who is an ophthalmologist by profession has told media that he has not been in touch with his ex-wife since then. Dr Hayat said that they divorced around the end of 2012 after she expressed a strong desire to settle abroad (specifically Australia or Europe), which he was not willing to do. He further expressed shock saying he is unable to understand how Shaheen has changed so much in the past few years.

“I have no relationship with her. We got separated in 2012. Both our children live with me. We haven’t been in touch since the separation,” he told a news agency. What was Shaheen like a decade ago? Zafar says, “She was not religious at all. Rather, she was open-minded. She wanted to go to Australia or Europe. After that, we separated. There was a disagreement about going to Australia.” At the same time, the doctor says that their two sons also do not speak to Shaheen.

Dr Shaheen Shahid’s brother expresses shock, disbelief

Shaheen had been living separately and had no contact with the main family for the last three years, so the family was unaware of their activities or associations.

Dr. Shaheen Shahid’s elder brother, Mohammad Shoaib also expressed shock and disbelief over her alleged involvement in a terror module linked to the Delhi car blast. He told media that he and his family are struggling to believe the accusations and cannot believe she is involved in terrorism. Shoaib revealed that he hasn’t been in touch with his sister for four years, though their parents maintained occasional contact.

“Neither my father nor I were treated harshly. There was no pressure or force used to make us say anything. They only asked about when my sister stopped visiting us. Parents will naturally call their children to ask how they are doing. I am her elder brother, of course, I would also worry about her. Isn’t that normal?” he told media.

“Even when she was studying medicine, there was never any sign of her being involved in anything suspicious. I still don’t believe these allegations. As I have said before, I simply cannot believe it,” Shoaib stated.
