Delhi: 15-Year-Old Boy Falls Into Open Drain in Jasola

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 15-year-old boy named Mithun, a Class 8 student, fell into an open drain in the Jasola area of Delhi on Saturday morning. The incident, which occurred around 11 am, reportedly took place while Mithun was attempting to retrieve a kite. Eyewitness accounts indicate that he was dressed in his school uniform at the time of the incident.

According to Shiva, Mithun’s maternal uncle, the boy was preparing for school when he made the decision to climb up for the kite. He stated, “We were all at work, including his parents. He was ready for school and, on a whim, he climbed up to retrieve a kite and fell into the drain.” This initial response underscored the tragic circumstances surrounding the event.

Following the fall, family members immediately alerted the police and fire department, prompting the launch of a rescue operation. Various agencies, including local authorities and emergency services, mobilised to search for the missing boy.

Search Efforts Throughout the Day

Rescue teams worked tirelessly throughout Saturday in an effort to locate Mithun but were unable to find him. His father, Avadhesh Kumar, expressed concern over the rescue efforts, stating that despite the presence of divers at the scene, there was a lack of direct action taken to search the drain. Kumar reported, “My son is 15 years old and studies in eighth grade. He fell into the drain at 11:00 AM on Saturday, but despite searching all day, he hasn’t been found.” This highlights the desperation of the family as they awaited news.

Kumar alleged that although divers arrived quickly, they did not enter the water and instead only examined it from the surface using sticks. This has raised concerns among the family regarding the effectiveness of the ongoing rescue attempts.

As the search continued, tensions grew among family members present at the scene, particularly Mithun’s mother. She was seen visibly distressed, pleading for her son’s safe return. The emotional plea from the family added to the urgency of the situation, drawing attention from the local community.

Family’s Vigil and Ongoing Commitment

As rescue operations persisted into the evening, Mithun’s family remained at the location, holding out hope for his safe recovery. Those present reported a growing sense of frustration and despair as the hours passed without any sign of the boy. Mithun’s mother expressed her anguish with a heartfelt statement, saying, “I don’t want anything else; just give me my child.” Her words encapsulated the family’s plight in the face of uncertainty.

The community has rallied around the family during this difficult time, with many residents offering their support. Ongoing efforts to locate Mithun will continue as family members remain committed to not leaving the site until they receive news.

This troubling incident has raised awareness about the safety hazards associated with open drains in urban areas. Concerns regarding public safety and infrastructure prompted discussions among local authorities, highlighting the need for better protective measures to prevent such accidents in the future.
