Welspun One launches a Global #SupplyChainofGratitude for Frontline Logistics Workers
In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, frontline logistic workers across the world continue to experience a critical shortage of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and other safety gears. The pressing need is to equip these warriors, who have been working relentlessly to ensure the continuous supply of essential goods during the lockdown.
As per WHO’s interim guidance document dated April 6, 2020 “the current global stockpile of PPE is insufficient – driven not only by the number of COVID-19 cases but also by misinformation, panic buying, and stockpiling (and) has resulted in further shortages of PPE globally.” As the report expands, the capacity to expand PPE production across the world is limited, and the current demand for masks cannot be met.
Acknowledging this necessity for a healthy logistics ecosystem, Indian warehousing player Welspun One Logistics Parks (WOLP) has launched a humanitarian initiative called the #SupplyChainofGratitude. The campaign aims at urging logistics companies across the globe to bridge the demand-supply gap of PPE and other safety essentials among frontline logistics workers.
Setting a global precedent to create this ‘Supply Chain of Gratitude’, WOLP has now donated over 100,000 disposable single-use masks, to support over 25,000 workers in Bhiwandi (Maharashtra) and Bangalore (Karnataka) to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Welspun One in the same vein, is encouraging other global warehousing industry players to aid and support their local logistics communities with means to combat the virus as optimally as possible.
“As the entire world is grappling to adapt to the new normal, it is imperative for us to stand together and work towards the betterment of our communities at large. At Welspun, we take our responsibilities as industry front-runners very seriously and wish to lead by example. Offering support to our government, the masks we donated were specially produced in Welspun’s Advanced Textile facility in Anjar, Gujarat, India. We remain fully committed to protecting the health of workers and communities in the vicinity of our projects across the board.” says Dipali Goenka, CEO & Joint Managing Director, Welspun India.
“As industry leaders, we must not overlook the needs of our frontline logistics workers who brave all odds and put their lives on the line for us daily. Their jobs expose them to contracting the virus on a day to day basis. We wish to support them by ensuring they can carry out their tasks with increasing safety. We recognise that we can do so only if our community worldwide stands together to advocate adequate welfare and safety precautions for the logistics sector,” mentions Ian Worboys, Member of Welspun One Logistics Park’s advisory board.
Appreciating Welspun One’s gesture, other prominent players from the sector have also taken part in the campaign and expressed their support.
Sushil Rathi, COO – Transportation & Procurement, Mahindra Logistics Limited, expressed, “Mahindra Logistics had answered the call for relief against COVID-19, in the early onset of the disease in the country. Through our HOPE (Helping Our People during Emergencies) initiative, we continue to financially support our driver partners. For our community at large, we continue to share their burden by providing a regular and continuous provision of essential products and groceries. And in this mission of ours, we have found a kinship with Welspun One. MLL is happy to be a part of their #SupplyChainofGratitude initiative. The masks provided by Welspun One are being used by our colleagues, who are helping India move its goods and keep the wheels of our economy running.”
Ramesh Nair, CEO & Country Head, JLL India, said, “It is great to see Welspun One come forward and address the challenges being faced by the frontline logistics workers. This benevolent gesture requires collective action from organizations within the industry. We are proud to be associated with Welspun One for their #SupplyChainofGratitude campaign. JLL India in association with Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) India has commenced YOU CAN, WE CAN programme of providing food supplies and personal hygiene items to the lesser fortunate daily wagers and their families. We hope these small yet significant steps taken by organizations have ultimate bigger advantages, used to ensure frontline workers are protected and lives are saved.”
As India has entered phase three of the unlock plan and businesses are gearing towards getting back on track, Welspun One has pledged to continue to understand other need gaps and offer care in safeguarding the warehousing and logistics communities across India, in the best way possible.

Indore Ranks First in Swachh Survekshan Survey Results 2020
Cleanliness has always been etched in the DNA of Indian culture since time immemorial. Mahatma Gandhi has gone so far to preach “Cleanliness is next to godliness.” Following his values and teachings, the government of India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi started ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ to promote cleanliness and sanitation in the country’s cities and villages alike.
In order to further promote the competitive spirit in maintaining cleanliness among cities, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs conducts Swachh Survekshan survey each year since 2016. The survey is the world’s largest cleanliness survey which covers about 4242 cities of India. It is a completely digitized and paperless survey, which takes into consideration document evidences, geotagged pictures as well as citizens’ feedback before ranking the cities in order of cleanliness.
According to the Swachh Survekshan 2020 survey results declared on August 20, 2020, Indore of Madhya Pradesh ranked 1st in the cleanest city in India for the fourth consecutive year. The Swachh Survekshan 2020 survey is the fifth edition of the survey. Second and third ranks were secured by the Surat City of Gujarat and Navi Mumbai of Maharashtra respectively. In addition to this, Varanasi was the adjudged the ‘best Ganga town’ in the central government’s cleanliness survey.
Congratulating Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on the wondrous achievement, Union Housing Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said, “I visited Indore a few years ago, along with a member of a Japanese delegation. When we reached the city, I saw he (Japanese) going to various places in Indore. I asked him ‘what are you doing?’ He said ‘I was trying to find filth, but couldn’t’. I don’t think there could be any bigger testimony to the achievement of the city.”
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan took to Twitter to congratulate the people of Indore. He said, “Congratulations to the people of Indore for achieving the first position in being India’s cleanest city in Swachh Survekshan 2020. The city has hit a four this time and surely will hit a six in the coming future.”

Surviving in a toxic work environment
It looks like time is up for corporate entities that ignore a toxic work environment. In the US, at least. Popular American talk show The Ellen DeGeneres show has been in the news because of multiple shocking allegations of workplace harassment, racism and sexual harassment by former employees. Hollywood’s darling host Ellen feigned cluelessness and kept mum for a while. However, the allegations kept rolling in after a controversial Buzzfeed report had many employees going on record about the bad behaviour of top management and the abrasive work culture.
The backlash was severe. Hashtags #ReplaceEllen and #RIPEllen were trending on Twitter. There were doubts about whether the 60-Emmy-winning show would even make it to the next season. Ellen finally addressed her staff and launched an internal investigation. Turns out, tough decisions were made. Three of the show’s top executive producers – who were the subject of many complaints Ed Glavin and Kevin Leman and Jonathan Norman – have “parted ways” (a polite way of saying they were fired).
America’s largest feminist organisation isn’t free of a toxic culture either. The National Organization for Women, better known as NOW, would be expected to be a safe place for women to work. After all, it was founded by pioneering feminists like Betty Friedan. However, things changed down the years. The resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement has brought forth some painful allegations about racism and ageism at NOW. More than 10 employees and visitors went public about how women of colour were openly disparaged in meetings and conferences.
On the last day of one particularly scathing conference where a black woman was heckled, some women marched inside the office to protest racism at NOW. The result? The organisation’s president Toni Van Pelt is stepping down on August 28. We can’t expect the same level of moral culpability from top management in India Inc. Yet, there might be a silver lining.
What is a toxic work environment?
Opinion on what makes a workplace toxic differs from person to person. Bullying is hands-down a strong indicator, though. An office where you are continuously silenced, or saddled with tedious tasks, disallowed leaves, not included in important discussions or excluded from most banter is pretty much toxic. If the supervisor or manager participates in the bullying, it’s bad. If he/ she ignores negative behaviour towards staffers, then the boss is an enabler of the toxic workplace culture. A toxic work environment can lead to absenteeism and abysmal productivity. Worse, it can lead to various health issues including depression, anxiety and panic attacks.
Work-from-home a blessing in disguise
For office workers trying to survive in toxic workplaces, the temporary work-from-home arrangement because of COVID-19 was a blessing in disguise. Says web designer Laxmi D, employed with a media house in Delhi, “I was thinking hard of ways to escape the negativity in my office and was at the point of quitting just before the pandemic hit. My office was closed due to the lockdown and I couldn’t be happier about working from home. WFH has allowed me to physically distance myself from the bullies at work. They don’t influence me negatively on Zoom calls and email interactions as they could when I was working in their midst.”
Laxmi recalls with horror how she used to excuse herself to the office bathroom and burst into tears after particularly scathing remarks from her manager. “I can switch off more easily now that I am surrounded by my family members. WFH has taken the pressure off,” she says.
Laxmi is much stronger and more relaxed to survive a toxic work environment in the new normal. The past few months have given her – and countless other office workers – a break from round-the-year workplace bullying. She confidently states, “I have started documenting what happens on a daily basis. If the bullying continues after returning to office, I will take it to the HR or the management. On the off-chance that my complaint is ignored, there’s always the option of leaving an organisation which doesn’t value your presence!”

APPL Launches ICU Service in Assam under the Aegis of Tata Sons
In a time of crisis, to support the healthcare system of our country, Amalgamated Plantations Pvt. Ltd. (APPL), the second-largest tea producer in India, has announced the installation of ICU in APPL’s Referral Hospital and Research Centre (RHRC), under the aegis of Tata Sons. The non-profit secondary healthcare unit at Chubwa Tea Estate of APPL has received its first ICU installation with more patient accommodation and ventilator units to strengthen the COVID Relief operations in Assam.
The unprecedented humanitarian crisis COVID has put the world in has pushed the healthcare sector to test its limits. RHRC is a secondary care hospital by APPL that has been treating over 3 lakh patients in Assam along with patients coming from neighbouring states of Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh over a decade. The latest addition in the infrastructure, newly renovated ICU has been developed by converting the existing Special Care Unit (SCU) with 6 new beds, ventilator units and isolation curtains.
Vikram Singh Gulia, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, APPL said, “APPL is indeed delighted and proud to set up this new ICU at its RHRC to strengthen the COVID relief operation in Assam. On behalf of APPL, APPL Foundation (APPLF) and the local communities being served by RHRC, I would like to convey our gratitude to Tata Sons for the noble gesture and kind support in sponsoring this initiative.”
Presently, the ICU is serviceable only for Outpatient Department (OPD), as COVID patients are to receive treatment only from government hospitals, as per Assam Government guideline. Taking cognizance of the health threats that tea workers work with, APPL has implemented many COVID combat measures to nurture a safe and healthy environment at all of its tea estates.
– A total of 1.82 lakh masks have been made in-house and distributed across all estates for total resident population and authorized visitors like police, vigilance team etc.
– Besides complying with the social distancing and hygiene protocols, regular thermal screening is also done at each estate hospital.
– As a part of its COVID relief operations, APPL has also instituted special quarantine facilities at each of its 25 tea estates, which had been planned to cater to 1025 returnees approximately, for a period of about 30 days under the support of Tata Disaster Management programme sponsored by Tata Sons.
With the introduction of ICU service, the previously equipped with 70 beds hospital, APPL’s Referral Hospital and Research Centre will now be better health support for Northeast people at affordable cost, bringing a sigh of relief amid the pandemic situation.
