Capgemini announced today that its new carbon reduction targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as being in line with the level of reduction needed to limit global warming to 1.5°C. This is an important milestone towards the Group’s ambition of becoming a net zero business by 2030.
Validation of its new targets by the SBTi puts Capgemini on its path to accelerate its carbon reduction program across the biggest operational impact areas which are business travel, employee commuting, energy consumption and purchased goods and services. Earlier this year in January 2020, and before the COVID-19 lockdowns, Capgemini met its previous headline 2°C science-based target to reduce 30% emissions per employee by 2030, a decade ahead of schedule.
Building on this strong progress, Capgemini is now fast-tracking efforts to become a net zero business within the next decade, firming up strategies for electric fleet transition, switching to 100% renewable energy by 2025, and leveraging the possibilities of remote delivery through its digital workplace plan. In addition, plans also include building low carbon travel alternatives into policy, creating a new commuting action plan, and focusing on supply chain emissions reduction. The net zero initiative at Capgemini is a cross-organizational effort with collaboration across technology, facilities, business and infrastructure functions.
Capgemini’s new science-based targets include:
– Reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 80% by 2030 from a 2015 base year;
– Reducing absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services by 50% by 2030 from a 2015 base year;
– Reducing Scope 3 GHG emissions from business travel and employee commuting 50% per employee by 2030 from a 2015 base year; and
– Increasing proportion of renewable electricity to 100% by 2025.
Speaking on the SBTi validation and what it will mean in terms of reimagining the way Capgemini will travel, work, and deliver projects, Shobha Meera, Capgemini’s Group CSR Officer and member of the Group Executive Committee, said: “This milestone is a validation of our commitment and plan to be a net zero business by 2030. We view our journey to a sustainable future as good for the planet, good for our people, and fundamental to our role as a leader in technology and business transformation.”
A responsible and multicultural company of 265,000 people in nearly 50 countries, Capgemini’s purpose is to unleash human energy through technology for an inclusive and sustainable future.

Day 7 of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Kalaratri. Kalaratri is considered to be the most ferocious form of Goddess Durga. It is believed that Parvati removed her fair skin to kill the demons Sumbha and Nisumbha. This form of the Mother Goddess is mounted on a donkey. Since she blesses all those who are humble and humane, she is also known as Shubhankari, meaning the one who does good. Indians have been fortunate to have witnessed and experienced the affections of such ferocious yet caring women in the past, who have not only gained popularity but also love and fondness among the citizens.
Rani Abbakka Chowta of Ullal
Rani Abbakka Chowta of Ullal was the first female freedom fighter that India has seen. She was the first Tuluva Queen of Ullal (present-day Mangalore) and was crowned queen of Ullal by her uncle Tirumala Raya in 1525, as the Chowta’s followed a matrilineal system.
From a young age, Rani Abbakka Chowta was trained to be a good ruler. She was taught how to wield a sword and how to fight with one, military strategies, archery, diplomacy and other subjects on what was needed to make a kingdom run.
When her small kingdom, situated in the western coastal region of India, caught the attention of the Portuguese, they made an attempt to capture it for its strategic importance and fertility of the land. However, the first attempt made by the foreign power with superior navy underestimated the leadership of queen and returned unsuccessfully. After that, it became a recurring event where they kept on attacking Ullal but were never able to defeat the Rani and her army. Rani Abbakka is known to be the only woman in history to confront, fight and repeatedly defeat the Portuguese.
The Portuguese were finally able to defeat her only through deceit, as they corrupted her husband against her, who in turn, betrayed her. After the defeat, she was captured and immediately imprisoned. Despite this, she managed to head a single-handed revolt within bars and was eventually killed in the revolt itself. Her legacy now lives on through memory in Dakshin Karnataka in the form of folk songs, stories and performances of Yakshagana – a form of local theatre
Velu Nachiyar of Sivaganga
Velu Nachiyar, the queen of Sivaganga in Tamil Nadu, was the first Indian ruler to fight and triumph against the British. Queen Velu Nachiyar was popularly known as ‘veeramangai’ which means brave woman.
In 1780, Velu Nachiyar bravely defeated the British to reclaim her territory that they had captured after killing her husband. She managed to do this through a brilliantly formulated coup. She found out the location at which the British had stored their ammunition. In order to defeat them, she devised a suicide attack with her commander in chief Kuyili and destroy all the ammunition.
To carry out the attack, Kuyili doused herself in ghee and set herself on fire and jumped into the ammunition store, destroying everything. This is believed to be the first recorded suicide bomb in the history of the world.
Rani Tarabai of Marathas
Rani Tarabai was the wife of Rajaram, Shivaji’s son from his second wife Soyrabai. After the political instability caused after the passing of Shivaji and his sons, Tarabai took over the reins of Maratha kingdom in the name of her four-year-old son – Shivaji 2. Under her leadership, the Marathas were able to recapture lost territories and also raided southern and western regions in Malwa and Gujarat.
Tarabai was a brave, ambitious and level-headed ruler, who put her kingdom above everything else. She concentrated on fighting the Mughals and was an earnest politician who never went against her own family to attain power. Even after her leadership was snatched away, she continued working in the government. Had it not been for her, the Maratha Empire would have disintegrated long before it did.

Tomorrow is the 75th UN Day – the historic day on which the United Nations officially came into being after the ratification of the Charter by the world’s biggest countries. The UN Charter is the founding document of this great non-partisan institution that has been working towards global peace and equality.
India commemorates this special day every year by raising the United Nations flag along with the tricolour atop all the significant buildings barring the Raj Bhawan and courts. It was US President Franklin D. Roosevelt who came up with the name “United Nations”. No other global institution today commands the respect and impact that the United Nations does. It represents collaboration, communication and dialogue at the inter-governmental level.
UN Day 2020 – what is the theme?
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought everyone face-to-face with the reality of how interdependent and interconnected we really are. It is only when governments and people across borders come together to work in solidarity that we can defeat this crisis.
Secretary General Antonio Guterres opened up a global conversation at the beginning of 2020 to ask people about their hopes and fears for the future. World leaders read the answers from these surveys and dialogues. The result of this massive activity was an official “political declaration” at a high-level event. The theme that resulted from this event: The future we want, the United Nations we need: reaffirming our collective commitment to multilateralism.
75th anniversary of UN Day
October 24th is observed as United Nations Day since the year 1948. It was established in 1945. Therefore, this year marks the 75th anniversary of UN Day. To commemorate this milestone, Member States held a special event on September 21st where they reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism. In this context, multilateralism means an alliance of many countries pursuing a common goal.
To celebrate UN Day 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, a virtual concert by La Scala Theatre in Milan was screened in the UN General Assembly Hall in New York and live-streamed on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. The concert was sponsored by the Mission of Italy under the theme ‘Reimagine, Rebalance, Restart: recovering together for our shared humanity’. It featured musician Roberto Bolle as well as the Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala, besides classical and modern dances, curated specifically for the gig.
Turning Europe UN Blue
The UNRIC (UN Regional Information Centre for Western Europe) has launched the pan-European campaign ‘Turn Europe UN Blue’ for the 75th anniversary. Many of the United Nation’s founding states are from Europe, so the gesture will definitely be grand. For a continent known for its architecture and iconic classical structures, it’s not surprising that on UN Day over 180 landmarks and museums there will be lit up in deep blue, the official colour of the global body.
This is a symbolic effort to speak the language of international cooperation, peaceful dialogue and sustainable development, everything that the United Nations stands for.

The social sector in India has long been challenged by the fact that critical issues that need addressing – girls’ empowerment, healthcare, employability, education, sanitation – are so widespread and deep-rooted that creating social change is a formidable task. And its’ not just in mega cities that lie many solutions to such challenges. In fact, in many small towns, villages and even hamlets, their citizens could teach us life’s most invaluable lessons.
Here is one such story of how the determination to keep children connected to education, changed the destiny of an entire village in Maharashtra:
Natala is a village in Wardha district, Maharashtra that had no transport connectivity. Education beyond class 8 had been a challenge for several years as children had no access to school. The nearest secondary school was 5 kms away with no transport from the village. Instead children would have to walk a narrow, jungle and stone laden path to access transport to the city, a risk none of the parents were willing to take.
When Magic Bus began its intervention in Natala village through Project Disha, many children were dropping out of school as there was no transport connectivity. Project Disha mobilised the Sarpanch, parents, students and local stake holders and advocated for a road and a bus service that connected the village to the city. 10 months of mobilising, rigorous follow ups and sustained efforts finally led to the start of a bus service for Natala village.
Seeing the bus service start, Mayuri, a girl residing in Natala, was the happiest, as she too, like others had decided to drop out of school. Mayuri is a differently abled girl who found it impossible to walk the distance. Her mother who is an ex Sarpanch and her community members took it upon them to make sure that no child drops out.
The bus service is not merely a move to address the crisis. Rather, it provides an opportunity for the people of Natala: It is connecting residents of Natala to livelihood opportunities. It is giving them access to healthcare. It is ensuring that all their children now have access to school and can aspire to a future that is poverty free. More importantly it now offers an array of opportunities to the young girls and boys of Natala.
Mayuri was then able to continue her education in a school that was located 6 kms away from her village. She has worked very hard and received support from her teachers and headmaster, including her mentor, Vaishali who is a young leader at Magic Bus. In July 2020, her exam results were declared and Mayuri was the first child in the whole gram panchayat to score 84%. She has also ranked 2nd in her school. Her parent’s joy knew no bounds and she made every person in her village and school very happy and proud.
Mayuri’s hard work and determination has encouraged more than 30 students to continue to complete their education. Since 2017, Magic Bus India Foundation has been implementing Project Disha in 31 schools and 30 villages spread across 8 districts in Maharashtra. Project Disha is supported by HDFC Bank Parivartan. The efforts and mobilisation of the community have ensured that no child drops out of main stream education.
